ACIREALE (CATANIA) – Fifty years after his death, the City of Acireale will remember Emanuele Macrì naming the Theater in Via Alessi after him, as a sign of esteem and gratitude towards one of the most incisive figures of the culture and popular traditions of Acesi.
The theater in via Alesyes, which in 1983 was declared by the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Catania “evidence of significant cultural interest as the only example of a stable theater whose activity remains linked to the Sicilian tradition of the Puppet Opera”, will be named after the puppeteer Isidoro Emanuele Macrì with a public ceremony on the occasion of the 3rd Regional Puppet Opera Festival next June.
“Yesterday in the Council we decided on the naming of the Puppet Opera Theatre to the great Emanuele Macrì. Acireale thus pays the right honor to one of its most illustrious sons, remembering his memory to all those who come to admire what will become the Emanuele Macrì Puppet Opera Theatre, – declares the mayor Roberto Barbagallo –. We will inaugurate the theater during the regional puppet opera festival, on which we are working aware of the great historical cultural value and attractiveness of this tradition of ours. The Festival which will celebrate both Emanuele Macrì and the reopening of our theatre, after the important restoration work, will take place in the month of June, opening our summer”.
“Finally Acireale, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death, is preparing to name the historic puppet theater in via Alessi after one of the greatest masters of this art, the puppeteer Emanuele Macrì, who for decades was the undisputed animator. Many years after the death of Maestro Macrì, a historical gap for the city is being healed.
For the occasion the municipal administration will organize a series of events which will culminate with the puppet opera festival scheduled for the weekends from 7 to 8 and from 14 to 16 June, which will see the participation of companies from Acesi and the whole of Sicily, who will perform in the historic renovated theatre, which will be thus returned to the city and to the adjacent Piazza Alfio Grassi,” announces the Councilor for Culture Enzo Di Mauro.
