Ferrari, the changes for Imola: the sides change. More motivated to challenge Red Bull

Charles Leclerc took to the track this morning at Fiorano with a heavily modified Ferrari SF-24, essentially adopting the evolutionary package planned for the Emilia Romagna GP in Imola next week. At first glance it can be seen that the area most affected by the changes concerns, as already mentioned several times, the sides. More precisely, the entrances have been modified, now characterized by an upper lip which partly conceals the entrance section which, unlike the Red Bull RB20 whose inspiring concept it follows, is not characterized by an inclined slit, but rather maintains the section previous vertical, only slightly angled at the outer edge.

new sides

The lower edge of the sides is much more rounded than the previous version, with the lower channel accentuated and forming a sort of lozenge section towards the rear of the side. The work of the aerodynamicists directed by Diego Tondi is very interesting, even at the height of the cockpit, where there is a clear change to the vertical separator profile, no longer connected to the Halo, but above all the bypass duct vent has disappeared, incorporated into the bodywork which , at the height of the bonnet it presents a section increased in height, up to the level of a single vertical vent (at least in the tested version), which precedes, instead, the rear section of the bazooka characterized by a lowered profile.

the flow of hot air is exploited

In fact, in this way, the aerodynamicists were able to exploit the flow of hot air coming out of the side vent to energize what, directed towards the rear, affects the beam wing. In practice there is a splitting of the flows that touch the passenger compartment, in the part on the sides of the headrest and in the lateral section. As with the changes to the sides and the bottom, which for the moment are not visible from the first images from Fiorano, these are non-secondary changes, capable of increasing the load points of this car, without affecting the excellent balance that has characterized it since the beginning of the season.

the details

In the details, it can be seen how the mouths are now characterized by an upper lip which partly conceals the vertical section of the air intake 1). The lower channel 2) is very accentuated thanks to a more rounded section of the vertical portion of the sides. The channel extends and widens towards the rear section, increasing the passage of direct flow to the rear axle. 3) The study of flows and its energization through an increase in the vertical section of the hot air disposal grille, followed by a lowering of the rear section of the bodywork, to generate a deep channel is decidedly interesting and refined. On the sides of the passenger compartment, 4) the vertical separator profile is no longer connected to the halo. The outlet air intake of the bypass duct was then incorporated into the new shape of the bodywork towards the single vertical slot for disposing of the hot air.
