He killed him among the stalls of the Livorno market, the victim’s family compensated with 547 thousand euros

He had collapsed on a counter in the market in Piazza Cavallotti in Livorno, a tragic morning 11 years ago, only to die a few minutes later from his injuries. After the final conviction of his murderer, the compensation sentence for the heirs has now also arrived.

On 27 February 2013, Claudio Costanzo, 60 years old, a carpenter from Livorno died upon arrival at the hospital after the 118 intervention. The stab wounds inflicted by his killer, after an argument for trivial reasons, proved fatal And that same morning the carabinieri had arrested Alfredo Andreucci, 56 years old, a building contractor, as he was returning home after the tragic bloody incident. Sentenced to 30 years in prison, avoiding life imprisonment for having confessed, he had his sentence reduced both on appeal and in the Court of Cassation due to the lack of premeditation of the gesture and he was definitively sentenced in 2016 to 16 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

A murder and a sentence that had caused much discussion in Livorno and beyond. Now, 13 years later, the sentence has also arrived with a maximum compensation of 547 thousand euros for his family members, his wife, his daughter and his granddaughter. There were numerous witnesses at the time of the fatal stabbing because it all took place in a few minutes but among the stalls of the Livorno market in Piazza Cavallotti, which was always very crowded. The ambulance arrived on site with the doctor on board who immediately found two deep wounds to the chest and abdomen and a cut to the hand but upon arrival at the hospital there was nothing that could be done.

The police immediately started investigations to try to trace the identity of the attacker, understand the motive and recover the weapon. Shortly afterwards, the attacker of the sixty-year-old who was subsequently convicted of the murder was arrested by the police while he was returning home. There were working relationships between the two at the time, according to the reconstructions of the trial, and after a very heated discussion the situation had degenerated with a short chase and those knife blows to the chest and abdomen which left the victim with no escape.

In civil proceedings, the judge of the Court of Livorno, Simona Capurso, directly quantified the damages to be compensated to the heirs given that the main case had been defined by a definitive sentence of the supreme court of Cassation. The man was also sentenced to around 6 thousand in litigation and court costs. No amount of money will ever be able to remedy such events, a terrible crime that had disturbed an entire community.
