“The work carried out by the Basilicata regional council over the last five years continues to bear fruit.
For the second time Istat data testifies that Basilicata is the southern region where the percentage of families at risk of poverty and social exclusion continues to decrease.
If throughout the South the average is dramatic and reaches 39%, in Basilicata the average certified in 2023 is 27.3%, one point less than in 2022 and four points less than in 2021.

“These numbers demonstrate that The Lucanian regional plan of interventions and services to combat poverty implemented for the three-year period 2021-2023 is working following the guidelines indicated by the national government.
The Plan, as is known, is acting on the fight against poverty through actions shared with local authorities, social partners and third sector bodies in Lucania.
The economic resources to carry out the interventions have been transferred from the competent Ministry to the socio-territorial areas, and are concerning:
- The strengthening professional social service,
- the strengthening of inclusion interventions,
- emergency social intervention,
- the strengthening of the social secretariat and access services,
- the presentation of projects useful to the community and of interventions and services in favor of people in conditions of extreme poverty and homelessness.
The data on the decline in the poverty rate in Basilicata are in line with the national ones which in 2023 fell to 22.8% of the population thanks to a series of policies by the Meloni government which, despite the tail end of the pandemic and the outbreak of war in Ukraine has taken steps to defend the lowest incomes through tax reform and cutting the tax wedge and has introduced the Inclusion Allowance as an alternative to the distortions and abuses of the Citizen’s Income.
