Second weekend of May with the weather finally promising sunshine and decidedly recovering temperatures. So here are our suggestions, in addition to excursions, for this spring weekend. A guide with all the most important events in the city and surrounding areas until Sunday.
What is surprising about Nada, in concert with Andrea Mucciarelli on guitar on May 10th at the Studio Foce in Lugano, is not that she won Sanremo in 1971 with Il cuore è un zingaro but rather that she never received the Targa Tenco for one of her album. But it is no coincidence: from 1984 to today only one woman, Carmen Consoli in 2010, has won the Targa Tenco. Even without inconveniencing the female quotas, some reflection needs to be made. Certainly in the past the Italian cultural heritage has never favored the female universe, condemned for decades to completely marginal appearances in the world of author music. Many performers but very few authors. Today, when there are many female singer-songwriters, their lack of visibility is no longer a question of sex but of gender, in the sense that “classic” songwriting is certainly not experiencing its best season. On the occasion of the celebrations of the Bimillennial of Pliny, from 3 May to 31 August 2024 in Como the Alessandro Volta Foundation presents the exhibition “The catalog of the world: Pliny the Elder and the History of Nature”, an unpublished story dedicated to the figure and life of Pliny the Elder, from antiquity to the present day. With the artistic coordination of the National Committee for the Celebrations of the two thousandth anniversary of the birth of Pliny the Elder and curated by Gianfranco Adornato, Professor of Archeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, the exhibition retraces the events of Pliny the Elder – a citizen of Como – , highlighting the extraordinary success of his work over the centuries and its relevance in contemporary society, engaged in a profound reflection on the protection of the environment and man’s relationship with nature. The Pinacoteca Civica di Como presents the exhibition curated by architects Davide Adamo and Marina Botta in its rooms on the first floor until 13 October 2024. At the center of the research of the two contemporary artists – among the most renowned in Scandinavian art – is the observation and representation of a region of Northern Europe, still largely in its natural state, the attention to the value and fragility of the landscape, the climate and the identity of the places, with their history, culture, mythology and traditions. In one of the most evocative places overlooking the Como city and the first basin of the lake from above, flags, watercolours, bronzes and photographs document the birth and development of the performance spread across various nations of the world, which represents one of the most intense works by the Milanese artist. Until June 30, 2024, Castel Baradello in Como, an ancient tower of medieval origin built by Federico Barbarossa, which dominates the city and the first basin of the Lario, hosts Lorenza Morandotti’s solo show, entitled Cosmos’ Flags.
