THE UIL POLICE: IMMEDIATELY NEW RESOURCES AND INCREASE IN STAFF

A probable attack on the legs of a person who would appear to be prejudiced by the police, in via Ruggero Loria almost on the corner with via Monte Pellegrino. The Flying Squad intervened. The subject would have been flanked by a person with his face covered by a helmet. Then the two gunshots.
In this regard, the Uil Police Palermo underlines the high tension that must once again be recorded in the city. A worrying fact that leads to a consideration of the lack of resources and staff.
“Just to give an example, from 2021 to today – declared Giovanni Assenzio, provincial secretary of the Uil Police – the Libertà police station, which is also territorially responsible for the area of via Monte Pellegrino, lost 21 units. It is clear that with a situation of this kind, duty shifts, both day and night, can be put into difficulty”.
The Libertà police station covers a wide area of the city which includes several central and non-central neighborhoods, such as Vergine Maria, Arenella, Acquasanta, Monte Pellegrino but also via Montalbo and Borgo Vecchio; areas where serious episodes have recently occurred such as the tragic shooting in the nightclub and that in via Isidoro La Lumia. “Our steering wheel – reported Corrado Basile, member of the Uil provincial secretariat – must carry out various tasks, such as the protection of sensitive areas and the verification of house arrest and further interventions that may be requested from time to time also to integrate other skills. The shortcomings we are seeing clearly seem to have become chronic.”
The Uil Palermo police have on other occasions highlighted how the same officers who operate on the streets sometimes find themselves in operational difficulties. More resources would have been sufficient to deal with the serious acts of rebellion carried out on the occasion of the famous “blazes” of San Giuseppe where the police were hit with bottles, but also for the attack which occurred against the carabinieri and policemen interventions in the so-called “bad nightlife”, at the request of citizens, in Piazza Sturzo. Citizens who repeatedly complain against the police forces, pointing to a lack of prevention.
“Tonight’s events – concluded Giovanni Assenzio – cannot help but raise further serious reflection on what is happening and on how we should intervene to find a solution that protects citizens first and foremost.”
