«Life is the art of meeting», according to the famous mantra of Vinícius de Moraes that Giovanni Falzone, virtuoso globetrotter of the trumpet, has made his own all his life. And the «Three Generations» project which led to the 12th edition of the «Monza Visionaria» exhibition revolves around this principle. There is Paolo Petrecca, his direct student, in the sense that he studied with him at the Siena Conservatory, and there is the teacher of anyone here who has approached the instrument in the last half century: none other than Enrico Rava (in the photo by Maurizio Anderlini). Two “exceptional” meetings for Falzone, two people from whom the musician got and to whom, together, he gave. In the form of music and beyond.

Three jazz trumpet performers from three different generations, all three on stage at the Teatro Manzoni. The concert opens with the ballad «Occhi diversi», written by Falzone as a tribute to David Bowie (who, famously, had two eyes of different colors) and in awareness of the fact that anything, if you look at it with different eyes, acquires meaning: on the Petrecca is on stage with him drawing sinuous melodies.

On «Wizard» South America bursts into the limelight and the very young rhythm section made up of Diego Albini (piano), Enrico Palmieri (double bass) and Antonio Marmora (drums) takes the spotlight, before the relay between the future and history, with the trumpet Paolo Petrecca who leaves room for Ernico Rava’s flugelhorn. A new journey begins which starts from «The Trial», a piece recorded at the time of «Rava Noir», and passes from «The poet of silence» which Falzone wrote in 2019, on the occasion of the Maestro’s 80th birthday, celebrating his poetics a characteristic which is first and foremost skilful management of breaks.

Rava gives the composition the lyricism of his solo and the composer with words full of esteem and affection: «Every day, since I was a boy, I fight with this instrument», he will say from the stage, «sometimes I win, other times he wins. Giovanni, on the other hand, is incredible: he always wins.” The audience enjoys the intimacy of «Certi Angolos Hidden», among the Rava pieces that Falzone prefers.

There will be time for the standard «You don’t know what love is», for another song by Falzone («Nuvole») with Petrecca returning to the stage and a must by Rava’s 4Uartet («Spider Blues»), first of the finale with «Alone Together» which was by Miles, by Chet, by Ella. A piece about being alone, yet finding yourself together. Perfect closing to celebrate the art of meeting.
