Marco Dessena, 37-year-old star of Cus Cagliari: «Quit? It’s not time yet.”

Lots of spectacular goals and assists galore. A refined technique and ease in dribbling.

Marco Dessena he took his first steps in the Antonstefano football school, under the watchful eye of coach Giovanni Sarritzu who already saw his great talents.

«After my career in the youth sector, I made my debut in the first team at the age of 15 in the first category with the Quartese club. It’s a great thrill to play with the greats”, he says.

His talent does not go unnoticed: here is the call of the main Quartu team. «In 2004 Sant’Elena bought me with which I immediately won the Allievi championship with coach Luciano Porru. In the same year I made my debut in Eccellenza.”

The boy is talented and Nicolò Napoli, former defender of Juventus and Cagliari, decides to take him to Piedmont, to Orbassanothe team that had entrusted him with technical guidance: «In Serie D. I remember a very tough group with battleships of the caliber of Alessandria, Derthona, which boasted the striker Lulù Oliveira in attack and Spezia, a luxury for the category».
In 2009 the big leap into the professionals: «Bernardo Mereu wanted me in Villacidrese in Serie C, he knew me well: he had been my coach a few years earlier at Sant’Elena».

Excellent performance but the adventure lasted only a year. From 2010 to 2012 the experience with Castiadas. With the Sarrabesi he achieved the historic promotion to Serie D, becoming one of the fans’ favorites above all thanks to the fifteen goals scored in the semi-professional championship. From 2013 to 2018, he wore Muravera’s shirt, with Oliveira on the bench, Progetto Sant’Elia in Serie D, Samassi in Eccellenza and Muravera again under the orders of Francesco Loi.

«Since 2020 I have preferred to dedicate more time to the family business, opting to move down the category». At the moment Dessena he runs and scores for Cus Cagliari who are having an excellent championship in Group A of the Promotion.
Now he can only enjoy great football on TV: «I support Cagliari and Milan».

Important goals are never forgotten: «I achieved the best one against Torres when I played for Muravera; I have many memories linked to many beautiful people I met in Sarrabus. Saverio Onano’s Castiadas and Giampaolo Aresu’s Muravera were two second families. In all these years I have had great coaches and great teammates, Nurchi and Sogus above all.”
The desire to run after a ball is still great At 37, Dessena has no intention of hanging up his shoes: «I still remember the first kicks of the ball. It seems like yesterday. A passion handed down to me by my uncle Mauro since my first steps. When I stop I will evaluate whether to stay in the world of football: this moment, however, has not yet arrived.”
