Reggio Emilia, the former Seminary will become the campus of the La Nuova Ferrara Nursing course

Reggio Emilia The former bishop of Reggio, Massimo Camisasca, referring a few years ago to the restoration of the northern area of the Seminary made available for the first time to the University of Modena and Reggio, spoke of a “secular miracle”. A synergy of public and private, but above all of sacred and profane, for a public good to be returned, in its full innovation and renewal, to the city.

Today, as announced by the protagonists in a conference in the Aula Magna of the Seminar, the second episode of this process begins: the agreement for the restoration of the south-west area of the large Viale Timavo hub. In September, if the deadlines are respected, work will begin on the construction of the Nursing Department, which will be transferred from San Lazzaro where lessons are currently held. The estimate foresees a total cost of around 8 million (of which 2 allocated by public bodies), with the intervention expected to be completed in the first months of 2026. This will be the third pole present at the Seminar, considering that the Northern area from 2021 sees the lessons of the Department of Education and Human Sciences take place and the South-East area is still reserved for seminarians. Specifically, the construction site on lot B3 will be extended on 6 thousand square meters and will include the construction of 6 classrooms (3 can contain up to 145 seats and 3 others 60) and 7 laboratories. The total number of seats for potential nurses will therefore rise to 825, also taking into account the study rooms. The South-West intervention, designed by the engineer Giovanni Corradini, is structured on four floors and also includes studies for teachers, educational laboratories and services, to which must be added external improvements with 50 new trees and over 200 parking spaces between parking spaces, motorbikes and bicycles. The spaces will also be updated on a structural level, with the creation of a thermal coat to improve energy efficiency.

A great Campusessentially, thought in its place to be near the Santa Maria Hospital but at the same time also in the historic center and which will attract more and more off-site students. News that certainly made Mauro Severi, president of the “Reggio Emilia University City” committee, happy: the architect was one of the first, in 2018, to believe in this collaboration between bodies, institutions and companies (the committee in fact includes giants such as Iren, Smeg and Immergas) and now enjoys the fruits of work that shows no signs of stopping. The other protagonists were also satisfied, starting with the mayor Luca Vecchi who underlined all the results of the Council on the academic front, also taking into account the creation of the Tecnopolo and the engineering pavilions at San Lazzaro.

«This intervention – specified the mayor – is also a response to those who claim that the historic center has been impoverished: here we are attached to the heart of the city». Excited the rector Carlo Adolfo Porro: «The episcopal seminary has given new impetus to the university centers – he specified – Unimore confirms itself among the top places in Italy in terms of employability after a few years after graduation and I am happy, as I am a doctor by training, that this time the spaces are dedicated to ‘health aspect’.

«Caring for other people unites the Church, through seminary activity, and the nursing profession – he declared Bishop Giacomo Morandi – it is a challenging step but we are happy to make part of our assets available to the university.” Giorgio Zanni, representing the Province, and Giammaria Manghi for the Region, finally renewed their commitment by focusing on care for others and service to the person.
