Legality lessons in Olbia, with prosecutor Capasso in the chair

Day of legality: the young people of Olbia meet the public prosecutor Capasso.

A packed audience of middle and high school students, around 250, enthusiastically welcomed the Prosecutor of the Republic of Tempio Pausania, Dr. Gregorio Capasso. The first of two meetings dedicated to Legality education.
This initiative constitutes the continuation of an ambitious project undertaken by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Tempio Pausania in 2018. The aim is to promote culture of legality in the territory, creating a bond between young people and the institutions that it is a founding value of civil coexistence. Prosecutor Capasso, in front of the students of Olbia, supported the importance of the family and the school as places in which the values of legality are expressed prominently. He reiterated the principle of equality, as described in the art. 3 of the Constitution, strongly maintaining that “we are all equal before the law, we must not make distinctions. The meaning of this day is to understand that we must respect each other, pay attention to each other.” During his report at the meeting in Olbia, Dr. Capasso underlined the importance of respecting the rules and being aware of the consequences of one’s actions.

The topics covered in language suitable for children.

The topics covered were different, all very current and of great interest to the young people present: gender violence, bullying, cyberbullying and drugs. It’s about widespread phenomena that profoundly undermine the social fabric and require constant and collaborative commitment from all members of the community to be effectively countered.

Educating young people about legality, promoting respect for the rules and fundamental values of the Italian Constitution, is extremely important. The objective is to spread greater awareness and encourage young people to report any situations of violence or abuse, always keeping the dialogue alive with parents, but also with teachers and institutions, which operate in the interests of the weakest to his protection.

The simple and understandable language used by Dr. Capasso and all the speakers at the meeting in Olbia involved the children and ensured that they could fully understand the concepts expressed.

Respect for the rules.

After a brief description of the functions of the Public Prosecutor, the president of the Council of the Bar Association, Dr. Selis, explained in broad terms the ministry of the defense lawyer. So he further explored the concept of legality.

Gender violence.

Dr. Claudia Manconi and Milena Aucore, deputy prosecutors of the Republic of Tempio Pausania, discussed the burning topic.

The topic on which the two rapporteurs particularly focused concerns law no. 69 of 2019, known as “code red”. This represented an important step forward in combating gender violence. The provision strengthened procedural guarantees for victims of violent crimes, in particular those linked to domestic violence. Furthermore, it introduced new crimes into the penal code, such as the illicit dissemination of sexually explicit images or videos. Furthermore, coercion or induction into marriage, “revenge porn”. Thanks to these legislative changes, the penalties for the crimes most frequently committed against women have been increased. And the protocols for listening to victims have also improved, thus highlighting the institutions’ commitment to combating this serious phenomenon. The two speakers underlined the importance of denouncing any form of coercion or deprivation of personal freedom, both in private and public life, of women, so that victims can feel protected and supported in the path of denunciation and justice. Dr. Aucore then underlined the importance of “education to feeling”. The cause of much violence often comes from a distorted management of emotions such as jealousy, anger and possessiveness. Educating in the management of emotions means teaching how to recognize, understand and manage them in a healthy way.

Bullying and cyberbullying.

Anna Rita Muraglia and Michele Delogu, respectively Superintendent and Inspector of the Postal Police of Sassari, spoke about it. Bullying is aggressive, intentional behavior, both physical and psychological, perpetrated against vulnerable individuals. This phenomenon is mainly observed in school environments and in youth social contexts. The speeches were accompanied by some videos that narrated real events. A very significant testimony it is that of 17 year old Alessia Piga. Who told her touching story of bullying, fortunately with a happy ending thanks to her willpower and her family, who proved united and chose to believe in her. Now Alessia helps people who face the same difficulties. Superintendent Muraglia, in recalling that not all bullying stories have “happy endings” like Alessia’s, underlined the importance of not supporting bullies, because even just laughing at the victim increases their strength. Instead, we need to support the “bullied” person so as not to make him feel alone and misunderstood.

Drugs and narcotics.

The lawyer elaborated on the topic. Nicoletta Mani, of the forum of Tempio Pausania. In your capacity as defense lawyer you told the boys about some episodes involving very young people in drug dealing. You described how people give in to drugs “just to try” or for other reasons: “Curiosity, the rebellion against adults or rules, the attempt to find consolation in a world where we are now required to be perfect at school, in the family, we must be thin, beautiful, intelligent, we must never make mistakes”. He also analyzed the reasons why people fall into the trap of drug dealing and recalled that it is not easy to get out of it.

The next meeting took place in Tempio Pausania on 9 May at the Teatro del Carmine, with other students from local middle and high schools.
With the meeting of the last few days, the Prosecutor’s Office has effectively achieved the objective of carrying out a function of ethical guidance of civic education for the new generations. In fact, the various topics were treated with the technical gaze typical of those who see deviations and distortions every day. With the intervention of the head of the Prosecutor’s Office, an attempt was made that will certainly have an impact on the consciences of the young interlocutors present. During the conference the children engaged in discussions with each other on the topics covered. Applause for the initiative, which was very successful and demonstrated how important it is to invest in the training of young people and in the promotion of legality. We hope that other similar meetings can be organized in the future. To continue to raise awareness and involve young people in the topic of legality, respect and the fight against all forms of violence and marginalization.
