Finally, the process for approving the PGTU includes adoption by the council and the following discussion and vote in the city council.

The PGTU

The points on which the PGTU update proposal is based are: reduction of traffic pressure; the optimization of the policy stopover; support for active mobility; and the encouragement of urban regeneration. The PGTU is divided into three documents: the general urban traffic plan, the detailed sustainable mobility plan and the detailed parking plan. The interventions proposed by the PIM Study Center were designed starting from the PGTU drawn up in 2015 and the works carried out so far were taken into consideration.

The works taken into account include: raising of pedestrian crossings and intersectionsthe Zone 30 which took shape in 2023 in a part of the Oltrestazione neighbourhood, the interventions in Piazza del Popolothe school zones built close to the “Carducci” and “Don Milani” primary schoolsthe lines of Bicipolitana and the works for the urban regeneration project “The school becomes the city“.

Parking and speed of cars

Also in the sights of the PGTU is the issue of parking lots (with particular attention to the organization of parking for residents). Specifically, in the detailed parking plan document, some interventions are aimed at reduce the traffic generated by those driving around looking for parking. The proposal is that of improve information on stalls through signage, directing people to areas where there is a greater chance of finding a parking spot and through the identification of new spaces that can be obtained from the reorganization of roadways.

Instead, for reduce the speed of carsinterventions are planned for the regeneration of public spaces aimed at encouraging their re-appropriation by citizens, so that there are the conditions for safe coexistence between different types of mobility. Work on the layout of parking spaces is also going in this direction.

Some proposals

The first phase includes the design and redevelopment of theLiguria-Montalcini axis. In this case, it’s expected a change in the regulation of the gate, limiting the transit ban for unauthorized vehicles to the two “hottest” time slots. “The link road can only be used in the peripheral direction in the morning and in the central direction in the evening, while for the rest of the day it will be open in both directions“, specifies a note from the Municipality of Legnano.

Some changes will also concern some intersections. For example, in that of Sempione-via Volta Left turns will be allowed for vehicles coming from Castellanza, while in that of via Montecassino-via Novara Interventions will be planned to improve safety. Finally, at the crossroads Barbara Melzi-via Pio XI a roundabout will be built.
