Former Syracuse center Mounir Hima announces transfer to Howard

Syracuse, NY ― Mounir Hima will transfer to Howard University, the former Syacuse University player announced on Thursday.

Hima, a 6-foot-11 center, entered the NCAA’s transfer portal last month after spending the last two seasons at Syracuse.

In the 2022-23 season; his first of him at Syracuse, Hima appeared in 27 games for the Orange. He was the primary back-up to SU center Jesse Edwards and averaged 1.0 points and 1.7 rebounds. His strongest asset was his shot-blocking ability. He rejected seven shots in an overtime loss at St. John’s. He had two games with four blocks against Boston College and Virginia.

But Hima saw a reduced role this past season. He averaged 0.3 points and 0.5 rebounds, while playing in only 13 games.

Hima started her college career at Duquesne. After redshirting his first year, he played in 21 games and started five in the 2021-22 season. He then transferred to Syracuse.

Howard is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Bison went 18-17 this past, but won the MEAC tournament to advance to the tournament. Howard lost to Wagner, 71-68, at the First Four in Dayton.

Hima is one of seven players off Syracuse’s 2023-24 roster who entered the transfer portal this spring. He is the sixth to announce his new school. The others include Justin Taylor (James Madison), Maliq Brown (Duke), Quadir Copeland (McNeese State), Peter Carey (Siena), Benny Williams (Central Florida) and William Patterson (undecided).

Syracuse coach Adrian Autry and his staff have brought in three players via the transfer portal: Colorado center Eddie Lampkin Jr., Delware forward Jyare Davis and Hofstra guard Jaquan Carlos. The Orange will also add a pair of incoming freshmen; McDonald’s All-American Donnie Freeman and Top 75 guard Elijah Moore to the roster, which will feature returning starters JJ Starling and Chris Bell.
