Berchidda, at the Wine Museum we talk about climate change

Climate change and viticulture. The first is a global theme that affects everyone without distinction and whose effects are increasingly evident in Sardinia, the second is one of the driving sectors of the island’s agriculture, whose production is conditioned by the changing climate. But how can we deal with climate change in the vineyard and in the cellar? We will talk about it tomorrow, May 10th, at Museum of Berchidda wine (from 4.30 pm), during a conference organized by Enoturistikain collaboration with Coldiretti Sardiniaand promoted by Ue.Coop Sardegna and the Municipality of Berchidda, without forgetting the important contribution of the University of Sassari – Department of Agriculture – Research unit on desertification.

A round table entitled “What’s the weather like in the vineyard? Climate change, vines & wine”, with a focus on the effects of climate change and its current and potential impact on vine cultivation and on the characteristics of wines, economic and agronomic strategies. The director of Coldiretti Sardegna, Luca Saba, will participate in the debate together with the head of the Wine Museum, Antonella Usai, and the president of Ue.coop Sardegna, Antonella Concas. The mayor of Berchidda Andrea Nieddu will open the works.

In discussion with the speakers, experts and scholars in the sector (the day will be moderated by Marco Bittau, journalist, head of the Olbia editorial team of La Nuova Sardegna, also director of the Regional Study Center of the Italian Academy of Cuisine), there will be: Luca Mercenaro, researcher – Research unit on desertification – University of Sassari – Department of Agriculture, with a speech on “Viticulture, a long history which is impacted today by climate change”; Giacomo Oggiano, geologist – University of Sassari with the theme “Climate variations over time. Causes and effects” and Aldo Buiani, oenologist for the speech entitled: “Sardinia tested by climate change: what will be the wine of the future”.

The event is included in the program of New wine in new wineskin, a tasting competition for wines owned by Monte Acuto, in its 11th edition, organized and promoted by Enoturistika (managing body of the Berchidda Wine Museum). This is an important and eagerly awaited event by the local winemakers, a multi-voiced discussion to take stock of the previous season’s vintage and, at the same time, evaluate the quality of the product while also welcoming technical suggestions from the specialists who decided to participate in the work.
