OLBIA. The Ministry of the Environment has rejected the project to build the liquid natural gas deposit in Cala Saccaia. At the moment, the reasons are not known but the news was welcomed with enthusiasm by the municipal opposition and also by the director of the Region’s planning commission Roberto Li Gioi.

“It is news that gives us back hope – comments the representative of the regional majority of the Five Star Movement Li Gioi – and which, without a doubt, legitimizes the validity of the protests of the Gallura citizens. The reasons why the methane terminal, with a 40 thousand cubic meter LNG storage tank, did not pass the environmental impact assessment are still unknown. However, already two years ago I expressed my opposition to a project that could put at risk the very delicate ecosystem of the Gulf of Olbia where the most valuable mussels in the world have been bred for a hundred years. In fact, the fear of the mussel farmers – continues Li Gioi – concerned the enormous quantities of water that would be taken from the Gulf to cool the plants and subsequently poured into the sea at very high temperatures. We cannot allow decisions dictated by commercial will to put the history and economy of our city at risk.”

The position of the Olbia PD: “An important first step for the protection of the Gulf of Olbia and the production activities present. We would like to once again highlight how the environmental and economic tourism context of our city cannot and must not be compromised by systems of this nature.
As we have done from the first moment, we express our full opposition to the Enerclima 2050 project”

The group too Free takes a position and declares: “While we are waiting to know the acts and the reasons, having learned from the press of the denial during the environmental assessment by the Ministry of the Environment, we express great satisfaction, having immediately fought as a council minority, together with many citizens and a good part of the productive world of Cala Saccaia, against a project imposed from above and harbinger of numerous environmental and economic problems for our city”.

“As representative of the M5S in the City Council – he writes Alfideo Farina – I express my satisfaction with this first verdict, from the first moment we had in fact made our own the concerns brought to the courtroom by the representative of the consortium of mussel farmers of Olbia during an open municipal council meeting on the subject”.

For the moment, no declaration has been received from the council majority and from the mayor of Olbia, Settimo Nizzi, a firm supporter of the LNG terminal project.

The LNG business, EnerClima 2050, is made up of Vittorio Marzano, owner of Fiamma 2000 SpA (47.5%) BB Energy (47.5%) which deals with the supply of LNG and Dr. Antonio Nicotra (5%), expert in LNG and bio-methane technologies from renewable resources.
