Reggio Calabria, students simulate session of the European Parliament

MEPs for a day. 500 students from Reggio they filled the Versace room at the Cedir on the occasion of “Europe Day”. During the morning, the students of the fourth and fifth classes of the “Piria”, “Gullì, “Righi”, “Vallauri” institutes and of the “Campanella” and “Volta” high schools, simulated a session of the European Parliament and it was the “Back to the school” project presented of the School of Politics. The municipal administration was present at the event, with the mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà and the Councilor for Planning and Remodulation of Community Resources, Carmelo Romeo. Some schools in Gioiosa and Cosenza are also connected.

A day that celebrates the peace of European Unity, organized with the Municipality of Reggio, by Europe Direct and the School of Politics which trains young people interested in public affairs so that they can make their contribution to the administrative machine. The event was preliminarily characterized by a focus on the “Back to the school” project which deals with policies or concrete solutions to problems. Below are the proposals of the parliamentary “students”, especially relating to youth policies.

According to the representatives of the Administration, the simulation is important because it allows children to acquire awareness of the path that led to the birth of the European Union and the work underway, passing through the founding fathers and their struggles, with the sacrifice of many. In particular, the thought went to young man from Reggio Antonio Megalizzi, “in love with the European Union”, died in a terrorist attack. A sacrifice that should not be forgotten: Antonio’s dream must continue to walk on the legs of these young people who are becoming aware of the functioning of the European institutions.

The anniversary Europe Day 2024 it is an important moment of democracy to celebrate peace and unity in Europe, even more so if the actors are young European citizens. The children animated the choral educational event, organized by the Alumni Scuola di Politiche association at the end of the Back to School school project. It took place at Ce.Dir. there simulation of a session of the European Parliament with the role play methodology for a large number of students invited, around 500.

The President of the session was the Mayor Falcomatà and the participants were the school groups from the Reggio high schools, also connected from Gioiosa and Cosenza. Actors for the occasion are deserving students who play European parliamentarians in the presentation of interventions in favor of the most diverse aspects of the proposed law on youth participation in the European Union. The Panella Vallauri Technical Institute contributed with the representation of Francesco Nicolò of the 4th BI class of the Computer Science major, who in his speech gives young people hope for a more sustainable future. Francesco Nicolò was very good at interpreting the role, he did not give in to the inevitable emotion and completed the assigned task excellently. Score10 and praise!
