FOLIGNO (by Giacomo Restani) – Everything is ready in Foligno for the start of stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia 2024. After today’s Tuscan stage with arrival in Rapolano Terme, the cyclists will move to the heart of the Umbrian Valley for the first time trial of the race which from the city of Quintana it will take them to the heart of Perugia for a total journey of just over 40 kilometres.

History
It is not the first time that the city of Foligno is home to the start of a time trial at the Giro d’Italia. It had already happened in the 2017 edition, when the historic “Sagrantico time trial” was held with arrival in Montefalco.

Times and regulations
The headquarters of the start of stage 7 will be set up at the Plateatico. As per the regulations, the cyclists will start individually and staggered with the start of the first athlete scheduled for 1pm, while that of the last should take place shortly after 4.8pm.

The route of the time trial
After starting from Foligno in Viale XVI Giugno, the cyclists will travel along the entire Viale Firenze to then reach Via Pasciana and cross Spello, Santa Maria degli Angeli and Ponte San Giovanni in that order. After the first 32 km of almost flat road up to Ponte Valleceppi, in the last 8 km the route covers a height difference of approximately 275 m, with peak gradients between 12 and 16%. Once they arrive in the Umbrian capital through Monteluce, the competing cyclists will cross Corso Cavour and Viale Indipendenza to then skirt Piazza Italia and cross the finish line along Corso Vannucci.

The favourites
In the general classification all eyes are on the Slovenian phenomenon in the pink jersey Tadej Pogacar, with the main pursuers Thomas and Martinez less than a minute behind in the general classification. Currently the first of the Azzurri is Lorenzo Fortunato who occupies sixth place in the ranking.

As regards the Foligno Perugia time trial, we asked cycling expert Marco Bea, press manager of UC Foligno and freelance journalist to tell us three names: The main favorite is Filippo Ganna then there are Thomas Gerainte the pink shirt Tadej Pogacar.
