“Sapien24” is a multidisciplinary festival dedicated to the centenary of the actress, director and writer Goliarda Sapienza, considered one of the most significant writers of twentieth-century Italian literature.
Tomorrow and Saturday we will pay homage to the Catania artist in the places where he spent his childhood and adolescence: in the San Berillo district. A two-day period of shows, readings, focuses dedicated to the world of Sapienza and opportunities for open debate with the participation of artists, scholars and enthusiasts of the multifaceted writer from Catania.

The community social cooperative Trame di Quartiere “opens the doors” to its creativity thanks to the idea and precious collaboration of Cono Cinquemani, expert in linguistic studies, lyricist and author. The intent of the event is to create an opportunity capable of involving enthusiasts, readers, curious people and scholars of the artist who drew so much inspiration from the alleys of the San Berillo district.

One hundred years after his birth, we intend to offer a tribute to those places and characters who characterized his “autobiography of contradictions”. We return to the alleys where Iuzza learned desire, the magic of theater and the charm of film, to reinterpret the changing relationships of those who still live in the neighborhood today.

The goal is to offer an experience that allows us to be guided by Goliarda’s gaze, to learn from her fragility and her genius to feel good together and experience the places we pass through in an ever new and original way and above all with the utmost respect.

“Sapien24” will move on two areas of interest: the artistic versatility of Goliarda Sapienza and the relationship with the neighborhood of her birth, San Berillo.

The program

The two-day program includes, for tomorrow, the opening at 6pm of an exhibition itinerary curated by Trame di Quartiere and dedicated to Goliarda Sapienza, with a focus on the mapping of the “Places of Goliarda”, on theater and cinema between past and present and installations linked to the life of the neighborhood today (at Palazzo De Gaetani, Trame di Quartiere); The itinerary will also feature the video installation “Hear… hear… The story of Goliarda who was a writer!”, conceived and directed by Maria Arena. At 7pm, Trame di Quartiere will host the Italian debut of the theater show “Amara Sapienza”, written and directed by Giulia Bocciero, produced by the Nouvelle Plague company, inspired by the work and life of Goliarda Sapienza (free entry). At 9pm, the screening of the film “Il porto delle nebbie” by Marcel Carné (Cinema King, via Antonio De Curtis 14).

On Saturday, the program includes the morning literary walk “The places of Goliarda” conducted by Cono Cinquemani and the operators of Trame di Quartiere. The route will wind through the San Berillo neighborhood through a game of historical and literary correspondences, to rediscover the places in which the writer and the characters of her novels acted through an exploration aimed at enhancing her very personal narrative quality (sold event out).

At 5pm, the screening of the film “Open letter to an evening newspaper” by Francesco Maselli will be held at the King cinema. At 6.30 pm, the meeting-debate “Our secret” will take place at Trame di Quartiere; it is a moment dedicated to Goliarda’s writing and the effect it had on the lives of the people who encountered his works, with the participation of Cinzia Emmi, Cono Cinquemani and the operators of Trame di Quartiere. The Festival is created with the collaboration of Cinema King and the Italian Cultural Institute of Edinburgh.
