On the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism, Bari commemorated Aldo Moro with a ceremony, on the 46th anniversary of his murder, which occurred in 1978 at the hands of the Red Brigades, after a long imprisonment.
The commemoration, promoted and organized by the municipal administration in collaboration with the Federation of “Aldo Moro” Study Centers, took place in two distinct moments: the mayor of Bari laid a laurel wreath in front of the memorial monument of the Apulian statesman in Aldo Moro square; subsequently, a laurel wreath was placed by the president of the municipal council at the foot of the plaque dedicated to Aldo Moro and the agents of his escort, on the facade of Palazzo di Città, in Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
“The Red Brigades, the maximum expression of left-wing terrorism in Italy, after having massacred his escort, killed Aldo Moro after a long kidnapping, 55 days of martyrdom – declared the president of the Federation of “Aldo Moro” Study Centers Luigi Ferlicchia – . The Red Brigades, intoxicated by the bloody logic of terrorism, thought they were conquering power in Italy and considered Moro the linchpin of democratic institutions, and for this reason they killed him. But they were the ones who were defeated, that season of terrorism was defeated. It was defeated because the reasons for democracy and the value of democratic institutions are stronger than the terrorist and revolutionary logic of upsetting the national balance. It is important, therefore, to continue to remember Aldo Moro, his escort and these tragic events, because it means remembering the defeat of terrorism and the victory of democracy. Democracy faces many difficulties every day, but it always wins, because it is the maximum expression of the strength of the human soul, of respect for others and their values and of the progress of our society. All of us, therefore, are children of this succession of events and of the strong response of our country, which was capable of giving today’s Italy a guarantee of democratic stability and development”.
