Onmic Reggio Calabria and raising awareness about bathing establishments: “They must be accessible to all”

“Onmic Reggio Calabria, in keeping with the mission agreed with the Protocol signed with the Guarantor of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Calabria Region and in agreement with the same, intends to raise awareness among tourist operators and the owners and managers of bathing establishments, so that they can put every form of useful activity aimed at allowing maximum accessibility to everyone at its facilities is in place” – thus in an Onmic Reggio Calabria press note that continues.

Reggio Calabria is a seaside city, in a region bathed by two seas, to the West by the Tyrrhenian Sea and to the South by the Ionian Sea and, at the same time, it stands out with its mountains on the top of Aspromonte. High potential tourist attractions for a metropolitan city but also the right to live in one’s land for “Everyone”. And when we write “Everyone” we read and write “Everyone” because we at ONMIC like to repeat it “THE OTHERS ARE US WITH YOU”!!!

People with disabilities still face numerous challenges in accessing beaches in an inclusive manner. Difficulties that imply a lack of adequate access, the presence of architectural barriers, limited services and a low level of knowledge regarding the offer proposed by bathing establishments. With the imminent arrival of the next bathing season, we urge and invite the managers of the establishments, i.e. beaches, villages, resorts, campsites, etc…, to check and adapt, if necessary, first and foremost the access to them by equipping them with ramps/slides and specific supports in order to make places and spaces easily and peacefully accessible to people with disabilities. The structures should be equipped with walkways that reach directly into the water, JOB chairs for disabled people, adequate toilets and even volunteers and OSS workers for assistance.

For real inclusion of disabled people, it would be desirable for the structures to include games, workshops, physical activities and moments of leisure and conviviality in their seasonal organisation. Easier accessibility and the provision of specific equipment will make it possible to increase the offer of services to users of the beaches with consequent benefits for the community. Our will, punctuated by attention and listening to needs, is to promote the greatest possible awareness so that we can boast that the beach is accessible to all, in compliance with the constitutional dictates of equality.

For Onmic Reggio Calabria Graziella Quattrone, Project Manager and Delegate for External and Public Relations. In agreement with the Guarantor of the Rights of people with disabilities of the Calabria Region, lawyer. Ernesto Siclari”– he concludes.
