“Finally all the Sicilian municipalities that boast the prestigious UNESCO recognition will receive concrete help from the Region. The regional contributions are arriving!”

The announcement, actually not new, came yesterday from the DC regional deputy, the Hon. Ignazio Abbate, the first signatory of the law, who has fought since his settlement in Palermo to support those Municipalities declared World Heritage Sites in a concrete and tangible way.

There are moments when a politician understands that sacrifices, insistence and perseverance can generate great results. Today I can say that it is a great day: the Regional Assembly has voted on my agenda which will finance the UNESCO sites”.

And here we ask the attention of our readers, because this statement does not belong to the Hon. Abbate but to the regional deputy Orazio Ragusa who in April 2014 (ten years ago) made this announcement, taking care to attract the attention of the institutions, adding: “We will finally be able to count on specific resources to finance interventions on cultural sites. We must now be ready, also in Modica and Scicli, to make the most of the tenders, preparing the necessary project activity in time”.

In these ten years it is to be believed that the institutions have organized themselves so as not to be caught unprepared by this new rain of euros.

But let’s go back to Abbate who yesterday declared “The Regional Department of Local Autonomy has issued the decree for the distribution of the total sum of €2,500,000.00 to be assigned, as part of the regional current transfers for the year 2024, to the municipalities in which UNESCO sites exist and to those whose territories are part of the UNESCO geoparks” and (listen carefully!), in the Province of Ragusa there are three cities that will benefit from economic aid: Ragusa (Euro 57,050.52), Modica (Euro 48,647.13), Scicli (Euro 37,443.89)

“Finally all the Sicilian municipalities that boast the prestigious UNESCO recognition will receive concrete help from the Region. The sums can be spent not only on works or heritage sites but also in the entire territory of the Municipality. I consider myself extremely satisfied because we were able, once again, to produce a concrete result in favor of Local Authorities” concludes Abbate.

Whoever is satisfied enjoys? Well, maybe. But at this point it would be nice (so to speak) to recall the satisfactions received from the special law on Ibla, passed in 1981 thanks to the commitment of the PCI MP from Ragusa, Giorgio Chessari. In this case the financing, in 40 years, has exceeded the considerable sum of over 120 million euros.

The fact that, here too, it was not always possible to spend the sums made available is another matter entirely.

But we are certain of one thing, this will be the last of Modica’s problems, where the sum allocated by the Region will be enough Perhaps to fix one of the out-of-use clocks in the UNESCO city, as suggested some time ago by councilor Ruffino to the same Hon. Abbate.
