more parking, more food, and more gates

Big changes are coming to the Syracuse Airport.

Thursday, the airport laid out its 20-year master plan focusing on growth and a better experience for travelers.

Jason Terreri, the airport’s executive director, said all of the changes passengers will see involve the airport’s infrastructure – and all of the changes being made have one goal in mind: growing the airport to meet the demand in the future.

“It addresses everything from the land side so roadways, parkways, parking cargo buildings, general aviation, to inside the terminal — gates, concessions, checkpoints, [and] baggage systems,” Terreri said.

The planning process started in 2019, but then Micron announced their plans in Central New York. The airport had to adjust to accommodate the influx of people the region will see.

When construction is finished, the Syracuse Airport will have between 1000 and 1200 new parking spots for passengers.

One passenger who has traveled through the Syracuse Airport hundreds of times said he is looking forward to the additional parking.

“One thing I think this airport desperately needs is a better parking garage,” said Josh from Baldwinsville, who didn’t want to provide his last name for privacy purposes. “[The Airport needs a] bigger parking garagelike three times the size of what it currently is with better lighting and [it needs to be] cleanerthe parking garage is terrible, but the airport is great.”

Three new gates are being added to accommodate more passengers and at least two new restaurants.

Qdoba Mexican Eats, and Einstein Bros. Bagels are coming to the airport.

More food options are something Kenna Kelly, who is also a frequent flyer at the Syracuse Airport, wants to see.

“Probably food options, I think in the terminal there’s not too many and maybe just more fast, casual restaurants. I know in bigger airports there’s more fast food options.”

Passengers also said there are many ways the Syracuse Airport stands out above other airports they’ve been to.

For example, they like the efficient security lines, the sleek design, and the small size of the Syracuse Airport, which allows for easy entrances and exits.
