There are almost 30 dialysis centers in Tuscany that this year too take part in the ‘Dialysis on holiday’ project, a service that allows those with kidney failure to continue the therapy even on holiday, in the holiday resorts of Tuscany.
The initiative has been promoted by the Tuscany Region for around 20 years and aims to offer help to people on dialysis who would otherwise have difficulty planning a period away from their home. For 2024 the Regional Council has confirmed 160 thousand euros of resources, the same amount allocated the previous year and which will be allocated to the health authorities to be able to organize the service. Local health authorities will receive a contribution of 25.82 euros for each ‘extraordinary’ service provided. Last year, around 500 people took advantage of the ‘Dialysis on holiday’ project for a total of 3,500 treatments. Throughout Tuscany, people with chronic renal failure represent 3-4% of the population. Of this percentage, patients undergoing dialysis are approximately 13%: seven citizens for every thousand residents. But the opportunity offered by the ‘Dialysis on holiday’ project is not only aimed at Tuscan citizens: it is extended to anyone, Italian or foreign, who chooses Tuscany for a holiday period. The service is activated upon request of the interested party.
