Sassari. A gesture of generosity from a few days ago for the little patients of the Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) of the Aou of Sassari and for their parents. «Breastfeeding chairs are a precious tool in neonatal intensive care – declared Mariantonia Cossu, head of Neonatology and neonatal intensive care – because they allow both breastfeeding and kangaroo mother care (Kmc) both comparable to a now consolidated therapy.”

Kangaroo mother care, a practice strongly supported by the WHO (World Health Organization), is also known as pouch therapy or kangaroo therapy and allows the baby to experience more intimate contact with his mother. A contact that, in some way, reminds him of the intrauterine experience.

«The idea of donating breastfeeding chairs was born in agreement with Dr. Cossu, because we thought about the well-being of the mother and the newborn baby – stated Paolo Spina, president of the “Club 4×4 Experience Sardegna” association ” –. With the over 4000 euros donated, we purchased 5 armchairs and they were positioned in the neonatal intensive care room so that the mother can have a direct relationship with the little one from the first moments of life. We are happy and I think we have fully achieved our objective.”

Ergonomic armchairs represent an essential element to improve the comfort of parents of hospitalized premature newborns, offering them a welcoming place to take care of their children. The constant presence of parents is fundamental for the emotional and cognitive development of children, and ergonomic armchairs allow them to be present in a more comfortable and sustainable way over time.

«Prolonged skin-to-skin contact, the sound of the parents’ voice determine a greater stability of all the parameters but above all all the positive stimuli that are provided influence the neurological development of the newborn. Breastfeeding, Kmc, pain prevention and parental care play a very important role in neuroprotection mechanisms. Our newborns thank everyone who contributed to this beautiful gift”, concluded Dr. Cossu.

The “Club 4×4 Experience Sardegna” association was able to donate the ergonomic seats to the Viale San Pietro Clinic, thanks to the contributions collected during the “Rombo Christmas” initiative in which over 120 vehicles from different areas of the island participated and which also saw the participation of associations Scarbura Tir of Ploaghe, Mistral 4×4 of Tempio Pausania e Square race wars Sardinia.

The donation procedure was handled by the General Affairs service of the hospital.
