Start today in Taormina district to Messina the intervention “Sealed barracks. Meno Duecento” as part of the health corridor which saw the priority assignment of municipal housing to families with disabled people or those suffering from serious pathologies. The Sub-Commissioner Marcello Scurriawho personally oversaw the start of
operations this morning in the ten barracks of the Taormina district, described the process: “Currently, we have isolated and prepared 100 units for sealing, with the aim of extending the operation to around 160 shacks in total, consolidating the urban regeneration process of the city. An important intervention, followed with the Civil Engineering of Messina, the implementing body, led by the Chief Engineer Santi Trovato”.

“If we imagined putting together these shacks distributed throughout the city, today we could claim to have demolished an extensive slum of 200 units”, underlines Scurria. The sealing process includes the internal demolition of structural elements, including toilets, to render the structures completely uninhabitable. These operations will continue for the next forty days, with the aim of completing the intervention within this period. The phase of assigning municipal housing to vulnerable people and their families is still underway, continues the sub-commissioner “we are buying and renovating apartments and redeveloping some areas, further demolitions are planned for the next few weeks”. The rehabilitation therefore continues and with this the valorisation of the long-degraded urban areas of Messina.
