A village nestled in the Val d’Ayas, considered among the most beautiful in Italy, it is an enchanted place inhabited by only 250 people.
At the foot of Mount Zerbion, at a height of 1700 meters offers a breathtaking view of the Monte Rosa massif. It is one of the favorite destinations for those who love snow sports and for those who have the passion of the mountain.
The village of Antagnod it entered the list of the “Most beautiful villages in Italy” in 2008 and is known for being one of the most popular winter ski destinations. Among buildings which tell its story, you can visit the Parish Church of San Martino.
Built in ancient times, in 1839 another one was rebuilt on top of the pre-existing one. His High Altar, consecrated in 1716, is a perfect and interesting example of baroque art. Its characteristic is that of being made of carved, painted and gilded wood.
The alpine village
The statues which complete it are witnesses of the religious devotion of the Valley. Among his narrow streets you can admire another historic building, the Maison Fornier, a typical building of local architecture.
It is located in the historic center of the village and hosts the Permanent Crafts Exhibition. And it’s also one of traditional houses best preserved in the entire Val d’Aosta region. There Cathedral of Santa Maria it is the mother church of the diocese of Aosta.
It is the oldest and most important religious building in the region. The church, according to historical reconstruction, dates back to the beginning of the spread of Christianity in the region. In the 4th century it was composed of a single nave of approximately 40 meters with some service rooms and two baptisteries.
Most likely the church it remained in use until the end of the first millennium. In 1500 the current one was built following the dictates of the Gothic style. Inside there is the Memorial dedicated to Maurizio Savoia and a late Baroque altar dating back to the Savoy age.
There Plaia del Bisbe it is a small square overlooked by the Bishop’s Palace, the Civic Theater and the Casa Doria. The Town Hall is hosted by the ancient Villa Rivetti. It dates back to 1924 and was the summer residence chosen by President of the Saragat Republic.
The paths
But the village it doesn’t just offer glimpses of history. There uncontaminated nature offers excursions to do in summer. The path that leads, for example, to the Blue Lake is suitable for everyone. As well as those that lead to the Lake delle Rane, at Lake Saler and Conterney.
The others excursions also suitable for beginners, they lead to the Grand Tourlain Refuge and the Croce Lakes or the Villa and Castello Lake. THE paths more challenging ones lead to the Quintino Sella Refuge, the Mezzalama Refuge, the Grand Tournalin Refuge, the Great Summit of Mount Perrin or Punta ChamPlong. The kitchen also offers traditional dishes and typical products.
