VARESE – Approved unanimously 2023 budget of the Cariplo Foundation, which is both the last of the Fosti management and the first of the new Azzone presidency. Last year the Foundation supported 1,178 projects in the reference area (Lombardy and the Piedmontese provinces of Novara and Verbano Cusio Ossola) in the face of atotal philanthropic activity for 177.6 million euros. In the Province of Varese, 47 projects were supported for a total of approximately 7 million euros.
The budget
A growing trend, in fact in 2022 the overall philanthropic activity amounted to 141.5 million euros. During 2023 they were supported 112 projects in the environmental field for a value of 11.5 million euros; 647 projects in favor of art and culturewith a commitment of 52.4 million euros; 109 projects in the scientific research sector against a commitment of 19.3 million euros; 273 social initiatives with a commitment of 73.6 million euros. Additional activities are added to these activities, divided by area of intervention 37 Fondazione Cariplo projects and initiatives with 20.8 million euros in contributions; among these are the activities developed in collaboration with the 16 local community foundations, present throughout the Lombardy region and in the provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.
The transition
When rereading the results of the 2023 budget, some considerations must be made, starting from the numbers. The first is that the foundation has donated over 170 million euros: an important figure resulting from the commitment of many people, supporting 1178 initiatives. The heritage today has reached a truly considerable value: 8.8 billion euros. The mandate under the leadership of president Giovanni Fosti ended in May 2023. The Cariplo Foundation’s budget is therefore the sum, or rather the multiplication, of the efforts and skills of many people. “I have often looked at the Cariplo Foundation from outside, with admiration, for its ability to act while looking to the future, operating with a double register that allows it to face emergencies
daily, but at the same time sow for those fruits that will be seen as time passes. This characteristic distinguishes it, together with the dense network that it has built over the years in the territories and allows it to be and arrive where it is needed, collecting requests from those who work on the front line. Looking at it from the inside I saw a hard-working machine, with a deep thinking mind. The results of this budget are the fruit of those who wisely preceded us, who took up the baton, of the excellent quality staff, and of the many non-profit organizations that have the task of transforming, with concrete actions, in the territory, the strategic indications to which the foundation refers. Our thanks go to all these people. Without them nothing could happen” he commented the President, Giovanni Azzone.

- Social: 9 projects for a total of 2,453,000.00 Euros.
- Environment: 9 projects for a total of 2,592,300.00 Euros.
- Culture: 26 projects for a total of 1,445,000.00 Euros.
- Scientific research: 3 projects for a total of 509,500.00 Euros.
