Germany, Catalonia, and Naples. An unlikely triangle that took Real Madrid’s victory very well. Napoli is the third wheel: frustration over yet another Ancelotti masterpiece runs on social media, above all. The “ass” is a bit of a discussion on its own. Instead, the German and Catalan press play side-by-side, mutually repeating the review of the “scandal”. The linesman’s improvident decision to raise the flag early on Bayern’s highly doubtful offside just before the equalizer in the 93rd minute. A procedural error that prevented the VAR from issuing its judgement.
And so while all the foreign European press celebrates Real Madrid’s “miracle”, the Barcelona newspapers shout about the “scandal”. And they do it a little on their own – for example with the editorials of Santi Nolla in Mundo Deportivo and Juan Bautista Martinez in La Vanguardia – a little by relaunching the review of German newspapers to achieve the same goal: full-throated owner of the refereeing error.
In Germany, in fact, the most popular press reacted with some indignation to the decision not to concede the German equalizer in injury time which would have sent the match to extra time. For example, Bild writes about the “scandal scene in the 104th minute” and adds that “the referee deprived Bayern of the chance to equalize and therefore go to extra time, what a scandal.”
Kicker is on the same line and headlines with an “absolute disaster”, pointing out that referee Marciniak “ruined Bayern’s dream due to the hasty, ultimately decisive whistle”. Derwestern speaks of “a scandal at the end of the match”. And on TZ they insist on “Bayern’s drama in Madrid: the refereeing error and the scandal make the team cry”.
Note that the two perhaps most sober newspapers in Germany, Faz and Süddeutsche Zeitung gloss over it with class: the mistake is one of the many things about the match. Title over Real Madrid. They leave the controversies to the quotes of the protagonists.
