PESARO – The bronze monument dedicated to Luciano Pavarottiin Piazza Lazzarini, the work of the Veronese master Albano Poli, has already been vandalized just ten days after its inauguration. EveryOne Group asked the institutions to provide measures to protect the work, which is already a point of reference in the city.
«Fortunately it is just an inscription in black marker – comments Roberto Malini, co-president of the organization – which can be easily removed. However, the event is a further sign of how urban works of art are at risk. Last year Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Sfera Grande in Piazzale della Libertà was defaced with an awl and in that case the damage was serious and difficult to restore. Now we must be more careful and aware of the fact that “prevention is better than cure”. The problem of vandalism is highly felt in Pesaro, where not only monuments, but also the facades of historic buildings have suffered attacks by vandals, as attested by the countless “tags” with which writers have defaced the historic centre.
«Our city is proving to be increasingly sensitive towards the protection of cultural heritage – continues Malini – so much so that through social media we can find an increasingly large number of groups of citizens who care about monuments, architecture and historical traces; some of these groups have thousands of members. Then there are committees and initiatives that highlight the importance of our historical and artistic heritage. This is why we must not underestimate even the slightest damage to a cultural asset. In the case of the bronze dedicated to Pavarotti, the installation of a camera smart security can be a deterrent to vandals. At the same time, it would be useful for the city itself to show more attention to its cultural assets. The cleaning of the bust of Collenuccio, in the square of the same name, could be a first step, which would have an educational and dignity value. Educational initiatives to respect monuments, buildings and remains of historical architecture would also be fundamental, to prevent them from being underestimated and therefore at risk of reckless gestures or invasive interventions during public or private works, in the latter case dictated by ignorance. ».
