Lecce: the State Police seizes two dogs – Pugliapress

The State Police service led to the execution of an order by the mayor of Lecce for the seizure of two dogs belonging to a homeless woman who was near Piazza Italia with a man, also homeless. The service was created in collaboration with the units of the Municipal Police and the Veterinary Service of the Lecce Local Health Authority, as well as the support of the operators of the Crime Prevention Department.

The operation:
The couple used to wander near the square and the municipal park with two large dogs, known for aggressive attitudes towards passers-by. After identifying the couple, the officers took them to the police station for investigations into the case, which is still ongoing. In the meantime, the animals were tranquilised, made safe and transported to an authorized shelter awaiting further health checks and a behavioral assessment to establish their possible danger.

Collaboration between institutions:
This coordinated intervention between the State Police, the Municipal Police and the Lecce Local Health Authority made it possible to guarantee the safety of citizens and the animals themselves, protecting the entire community from potential accidents. This synergy demonstrates the effectiveness of local institutions in preventing risk situations, especially in busy areas such as Piazza Italia.

Future perspectives:
Pending health checks and behavioral assessments, the two dogs will remain at the shelter. If their dangerousness is confirmed, a possible foster care with a suitable family will be decided, thus ensuring that the service has a positive impact on the community.
