The undulating track returns in today’s stage, the Viareggio-Rapolano Terme, the 6th of the Giro d’Italia 2024, after yesterday’s flat section, conquered by Thomas. A fraction in which the classic escapes of the day could be triggered, which could liven up the day. Live free-to-air on Rai 2 on TV and on RaiPlay for live streaming.

Stage 6, the Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio)-Rapolano Terme scheduled for today Thursday 9 May, has undergone a change compared to the official pre-Giro presentation: it is lengthened by 3 km, going from 177 km to 180 km in total, also increasing the overall height difference thanks to the inclusion of a tear at the end. The poison of the day will therefore be in the tail, with the addition of the Serre di Rapolano wall, the last altitude difficulty placed just before the arrival of a stage which risks leaving several consequences in the legs and also in the general classification.

  • Stage number: 6 – Viareggio-Rapolano Terme
  • Departure time: 12.45pm

  • Stage route: wavy
  • Length/Difference in altitude: 180 km, 1,900 metres

The 6th stage of the Giro d’Italia: route and times of the Viareggio-Rapolano Terme

We start from Torre del Lago Puccini in Viareggio with an absolutely flat first stretch of the day. 70 kilometers of waiting before the Volterra climb, a fourth category GPM which could give rise to mini breakaways and attempts at victory by non-ranked riders. It is unlikely that dynamics will be triggered immediately among the leaders. Then you stay on high ground, with a continuous up and down that sees the GPM of Grotti 40 km from the finish line which represents a tempting opportunity for day trips. Finally, the Serre di Rapolano which will push the finish uphill.

Giro d’Italia 2024, the fifth stage Genoa – Lucca: route and where to see it on TV and streaming

We shoot in Tuscany at 12.45pm from Viareggio and then leave the province of Lucca and enter those of Pisa and Siena. There were two flying milestones scattered along the route in the second phase of the route: in Casole d’Elsa and then in Pievina while the Intergiro was placed in Monteroni d’Arbia. We arrive in Rapolano Terme, after 180 kilometres, with the finish line expected at 5.15pm

The favorites to win today’s stage

Classic breakaway stage of the day, especially in the second part of the route, with unranked riders who could try to create the conditions for the right breakaway. Arrival with a slight climb which also includes the possibility of having a very limited number of treads. But pay attention above all to the falls: in the 5th stage some were the result of absurd carelessness.
