Gennaro spoke on “1 Football Club”, a radio program broadcast on 1 Station Radio Bowl, sports director. Below is an excerpt from the interview.
Could Italian be the right profile for Napoli?
“I was one of those who, before Garcia’s arrival, thought of Italiano as the most suitable coach to replace Spalletti. It could have been a risky choice, the Viola coach lacked experience. In hindsight, however, I would have liked to see him in blue. For next year, however, more is needed. Napoli needs a coach with a strong personality. Given how Napoli’s season went and the team’s problems, including internal ones, there are no alternatives to Antonio Conte. I saw the budgets of the Serie A clubs and, in fact, I believe that the Azzurri are the only club that can afford the Salento coach”
Choosing Conte, however, would mean entrusting him with total management of the team. Napoli, however, never did it…
“He’s never done it but, today, you’re in a situation where one year can go smoothly, not qualifying for Europe and making up for the lost Champions League revenue with a transfer, but the next one can’t be missed. In that case, there would be problems. Napoli cannot do a recapitalization, as happens at Juventus or in clubs that make use of large investors. To date, in fact, it could be said that it is Napoli that keeps Filmauro. The Azzurri cannot fail and, therefore, must rely on a strong personality who can give an important jolt to an environment that faces many problems. De Laurentiis is not a fool, he gave lessons on how to manage a company. In twenty years he will have made two mistakes. I consider him a highly intelligent person, who knows what he has to do. I am sure, therefore, that Conte is the surprise that can bring back enthusiasm in the Neapolitan square”
Are there any market movements that concern the Azzurri?
“It’s a time for reflection. Much depends on the type of technician who arrives. With Conte a certain type of market is created, which would not necessarily be projected to the so-called top players. With Benitez, in fact, players arrived who were not starters for Real Madrid. This company has never done a big blow and never will. There is a rumor about Luis Alberto, but let’s talk about polls”
