Savona – Fifteen years in prison.
This is the request of the public prosecutor Elisa Milocco towards Maurizio Traversa, 59 years old, a gynecologist from Savona, former employee of the Savona ASL, arrested last June 2023 (now under house arrest), accused of aggravated sexual assault. According to the accusation, during visits to patients, he practiced actions that went further, resulting in the hypothesis of sexual abuse. There are six charges against Traversa and six women who have taken civil action.
At the end of the indictment before the Court of Assizes, presided over by judge Fiorenza Giorgi (closed-door hearing due to the sensitivity of the issues), prosecutor Milocco asked for 15 years, requesting that generic extenuating circumstances not be granted.
The lawyer defending Traversa, Andrea Frascherelli, instead asked for acquittal “because the fact does not exist”. Now we await the sentence: the final date has been set for June 3rd. For the gynecologist the picture is complex and the accusations are serious.
Traversa had refused the abbreviated procedure, wanting to go to the trial to defend his position and reiterate his innocence. The gynecologist worked in private practice and in the Gynecology and Obstetrics department of the San Paolo hospital in Savona until last June.
The events allegedly occurred in the private office, where environmental wiretapping devices were installed during the investigation phase. The accusation is that of sexual assault. The file is substantial and is accompanied by videos recorded during environmental interceptions. Video, which according to the investigators, leaves no doubt about the “unorthodox” behavior of the doctor and the fact that the patients (contrary to what the gynecologist claimed in the interrogation) were not consenting. According to the gynecologist’s version, however, the actions were carried out on consenting patients with sexual dysfunctions. Specifically, he would have simulated sexual intercourse for diagnostic purposes using practices developed by him, but never compared with other medical colleagues.
Yesterday, the request for a fifteen year sentence. The sentence will arrive on June 3rd, at the end of the space for replies. —
