The appointment with “38th Parallel – between books and cellars”, the non-fiction festival created and directed by Giuseppe Prode which will liven up the city of Marsala from 16 to 18 May.
“Alternative Present” is the theme of this one eighth editionwhich opens its doors on Wednesday May 15th, at 9.00 pm, with an exceptional preview, which will see the protagonist, at the municipal theater “E. Sollima”, the Iranian pianist Ramin Bahramiwith “Beyond the present: Bach’s vision”: a conversation in music between one of the most interesting interpreters of the German composer and musician and the music critic Stefano Valanzuolo, voice of Rai Radio 3.
«We live in this present between two wars, one in the east and the other in the Mediterranean and the implications concern us and affect us closely – he declares the director of the festival Giuseppe Prode – “38th parallel” thus becomes an authentic social pact towards the Community, a cultural action which, in our parallels, can and must be understood as a desire to continue, as we have been doing for years, from below and in direct dialogue with those who have the curiosity to go further. And this year too, the Festival, in its eighth edition, offers suggestions, ideas, provocations, it does not just present books: these have always been the basis for broad-spectrum reasoning and conversations».
The 2024 edition officially opens, on May 16that 10.00 am, at the “Sollima”, with a Masterclasses with Ramin Bahrami they students of the “Antonio Scontrino” Conservatory of Trapani, while at 6.00 pm, at the Cantine Florio, the rector of LUISS will be on stage Andrea Principe and the editorialist of Corriere della Sera Massimo Sideriauthors of the book “The Cybernetic Viscount. Italo Calvino and the dream of artificial intelligence” (Luiss University Press): they converse with Francesca Lagioiaresearcher at the Department of Legal Sciences of the University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Scientific high school “P. Ruggieri” of Marsala.
The May 17that 6.00 pm, at Cantine Vite ad Ovest, Stefano Allieviprofessor at the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology at the University of Padua and author of the book “Governing migrations. It must, it can” (Laterza editions) converses with Daniela Melfaprofessor at the Department of Political and Legal Sciences at the University of Messina, in collaboration with the Pascasino State High School in Marsala. Also on May 17th, at 8.30 pm, at the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo Marsala, the screening of the docufilm “Food for profit” in the presence of the authors, the journalists Giulia Innocenzi and Pablo D’Ambrosiwith the introduction of Nicola Barraco, author of Le Iene.
The May 18thinstead, at 10:00 am, at the Cantine Florio, the workshop “Activate participation, stay online, create cultural contexts. Cultural production and its social value”, with Emiliano Paoletti, director of the Polo del ‘900 in Turin. We will continue with the presentation of the editorial project “Seguirà firmacopie – festivals and reviews in Sicily” curated by Domenico Occhipinti, published by Navarra Editore and presented this year at the Turin Book Fair. In the afternoon, at 7.00 pm, at the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo Marsala, the conversation led by Marco Marinoeditor for the publishing house Il Saggiatore, “Poetry as an alternative present”, with Diletta D’Angelo, Gaia Giovagnoli And Laura Pugno. Also on this occasion, there will be the participation of the students of Scientific high school “P. Ruggieri” of Marsala. To close the event, at 9.00 pm, in Piazza Purgatorio, the event “Earth, water, wine and wind: Tavern chatter on contemporary agricultural wine”, with Gaetano Saccoccio, Vincenzo Angileri, Natalia Simeti And Aldo Viola.

The festival takes advantage of the prestigious collaboration, renewed with a three-year valorization agreement, of Lilibeo Marsala Archaeological Parkwhich, as he explains the director Anna Occhipintihas among its missions that of «open the doors to opportunities for knowledge, combining reflections and valorization of the collective heritage, protection of beauty and critical ability, for a path of cultural growth that must never stop». Among the partners of “38th parallel” there is also the Council of the Marsala Bar Associationwhich renewed its collaboration with the event coinciding with the holding, from 15 to 18 May, of the VIII Juridical Congress of the Union of the Courts of Sicily and the District of Palermo “I Cantieri del Diritto” which, as explained by the COA president of Marsala Giuseppe Spada and the CPO president of Marsala Adele Pipitone«will see the participation of the leaders of the national forensic institutions and the Sicilian legal profession. The leitmotif of this edition – they add – will be “Artificial intelligence, fundamental rights and the legal profession of tomorrow”. A concrete synergy, therefore, between two events of national importance which, at the opening of the works on Wednesday 15 May, at 5.00 pm, at the San Pietro Complex, will have the honor of hosting the famous Iranian pianist Ramin Bahrami, to chat about music and human rights before attending the concert organized at the Sollima Theater by “38 parallel”».
