The Order of Nursing Professions (OPI) of Lecce on the occasion of International Nurses Day intends to carry out initiatives to better represent the role and figure that the nurse assumes in society, as well as the professionalism and competence that punctually every day makes it available to citizens and the community.
The nurse is a professional who deals with assistance, protection and promotion of health through prevention, health education, research and teaching interventions. Furthermore, she takes important decisions both in absolutely normal and emergency situations by designing assistance protocols appropriate to the various needs of people, assuming their protection. Also this year, the Order of Nursing Professions of Lecce has implemented projects which will be structured as follows:
starting from 6 May 2024, posting of wall posters in the cities of Lecce, Copertino, Galatina, Scorrano, Gallipoli, Casarano and Tricase to commemorate the international Nurses’ Day and promote their image;
on May 10thfrom 10 am to 12 pm, the OPI Lecce Councilors will visit the Obstetrics and Gynecology Units of the province of Lecce, to deliver all the patients and the Nurses an anti-stress heart personalized with the OPI Lecce and CIVES Lecce logos;
on May 11th, from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm, there will be a conference organized by Nucleo CIVES Lecce and OPI Lecce entitled: Health, safety and citizens: the essential nourishing nurse in society; on May 12th, from 10 am to 1 pm, there will be the OPI Lecce-Nucleo Cives Lecce stand in Piazza Sant’Oronzo to promote health education initiatives and simulate a medical rescue scene. All nurses who visit the stand will be given a surprise gadget; the evening of May 12that the Paisiello Theater in Lecce, to conclude the celebrations of the International Day, a theatrical show full of emotions is planned by the “MalfAttori”.
The slogan chosen by FNOPI for May 12th is “Let’s nourish health”.
Throughout the world on this day the nursing profession is celebrated. The celebrations take place in conjunction with the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale (1820), founder of Modern Nursing Sciences. “We wanted to take the opportunity which this year falls on Mother’s Day – says president Barbara Mangiacavalli – to return to the origin of the etymological root of our name which, both in Old English from which the term nurse derives when in Latin, it refers to the concept of nutrition, of taking care of those in need. This is what the nurse does in her daily activity. The professional-citizen relationship becomes a fundamental element for responding to complex care needs in continuous and rapid evolution, and represents one of the key elements of the health system”. The image that will identify this International Nurses Day is a flower that has its roots within the FNOPI logo and from there, protected, is born and grows until it blooms with lush petals that well convey the importance of care. “Citizens recognize nurses as a point of reference for their health needs, while politics and institutions are a little less so,” reads the note released by the Order. “Added to this is also the pay gap: the 460,000 professionals in Italy receive among the lowest salaries in Europe. For this reason, the high professionalism and high social and cultural relevance that nurses represent must also be immediately recognised”.
