The summer that is almost upon us will make everyone understand the importance of what has been lost in recent years in our territory – in terms of shaded green areas – partly due to natural disasters, partly due to direct felling by part of the public administration (felling, it is said, always motivated by necessity due to the diseased state of the trees).
The availability of green areas is a fundamental factor for the quality of life in urban environments; not only for their landscape value and as a place for meeting and socialising, but clearly also for their ability to cool/absorb CO2/prevent hydrogeological instability/produce oxygen.
According to the latest ISTAT surveys, urban greenery per capita in Italian cities stands at around an average of 33%.
Our territory is well below the national average: 12.5%.
Speaking of felling, we want to highlight the most recent ones: in Melara (in December 2023, compared to 26 pine trees felled, 15 country maples and 6 oleanders were planted – 5 trees less) and on Viale Venti Settembre many pine trees were felled on the way up of San Ceccardo (transfiguring the appearance of what is the access gate to Carrara).
Provided that the reasons are confirmed – and therefore taken for granted – we are of the opinion that the focus should now shift to replacement based on what has been removed.
We therefore ask ourselves whether the provisions of the regulation will be implemented for each tree eliminated, namely:
– total restoration with new trees
– restoration within a well-defined time
– with what type of trees will the felled ones be replaced.
Given the importance and urgency of these issues, we hope that the answers to our questions listed above, which are those of citizens of our municipality, are already satisfied and will not take long to arrive.
We also hope that a competent and common-sense dialogue will open with the institutions, which will be able to inform, involve and raise awareness among all citizens because – also in light of the latest scientific studies regarding global warming – we think that there is a single point to look at” interest” which is towards the environment we live in, aiming to:
– greener (We remind you in this regard that the current law on green spaces introduces the obligation for municipalities to plant a tree for every new born).
– no overbuilding
– zero land consumption
– conversion of unused concrete spaces into green areas (depaving)
