Highways in Piedmont, dramatic situation

Dramatic and unsustainable. This is how the Piedmontese hauliers belonging to the Italian Road Transport Federation of Turin define the situation of the motorways in our region. Traffic at a standstill on the ring roads, motorways besieged by construction sites, days lost in queues, problems that will characterize the next few months up to 2025 and which concern the Turin hub, the connections with France and between Piedmont and Liguria.

This is why FAI Turin is calling for the establishment of a working group in the Prefecture involving motorway concessionaires with the aim of sharing construction site planning organized in such a way as to reduce the impact on traffic as much as possible. “The risk of the forecasts of permanent construction sites and planned interruptions, communicated by ATIVA and SITAF for the summer and until the end of the year, will further contribute to the already difficult conditions faced by commercial transport serving Piedmont and Liguria”, he states Gian Luca Timossi, provincial secretary of the FAI of Turin, “a further blow to the productivity of road haulage companies, whose drivers spend more time queuing than travelling, and to the economy of two regions with a strong logistics vocation”.

“Piedmont is experiencing a now dramatic phase of infrastructural isolation, the critical points of which are represented by the Alpine passes, the Turin ring road and the connection with Liguria and Lombardy”, underlines Enzo Pompilio D’Alicandro, president of FAI Turin, ” Frequent closures are scheduled at the Mont Blanc Tunnel due to maintenance work, the second tube has been built at the Frejus Tunnel, but it is not yet in operation; the motorway section between Turin and Bardonecchia is subject to continuous extraordinary maintenance activity , with enormous traffic disruptions. The crossings to the south and west towards France continue to be closed (Colle del Tenda) or with severe limitations (Maddalena – Monginevro – Moncenisio), not to mention the Turin ring road, an incomplete and missing link of the eastern section, and of the equally critical situation of the motorways connecting with Liguria. A situation which is no longer tolerable and which risks nullifying a large part of the economic and social development opportunities of Piedmont in the coming years”.
