koinESTE, an accessibility project, is born

From the collaboration between VILLÆ and Department of History, Design and Restoration of Architecture – Sapienza University of Romewithin a totally free accessibility project for the user, is born koinESTE. A fundamental stage in the transition of the Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este Institute towardsdigital innovation and the use of preparation and accompaniment tools for visiting places of culture that are as engaging and customizable as possible.

The Institute intends to propose itself as an active part in the creation of innovative experiential paths and digital strategies such as to enrich the visitor experience and implement access through digital technologies, which make new forms of use possible. To achieve these objectives he asked Sapienza University of Rome, Department of History, Design and Restoration of Architecture, to develop a research project on behalf of third parties, for the digitalisation and virtual reconstruction of the rooms on the lower floor of the Palazzo di Villa d ‘Este, to navigate in mode real timein order to offer a pre-visualization of the rooms, allowing the public and the most diverse categories of users to move freely in the spaces, get closer to the frescoed walls of the rooms (with better enjoyment of the details than de visu) and obtain information of a different nature on them, through the implementation of multilingual contents, of a didactic-educational or cultural-scientific nature.

The tool is modular, implementable and functional for different segments of the public, from generalists to scholars, as well as for the internal staff involved in study, research and protection activities. It also integrates the provisions of the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural and Sensory Barriers (PEBA) of the Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este Institute, curated by architects and art historians within the PNRR.

“The virtual experience – comments the director of the VILLÆs, Andrea Bruciati – although it does not replace the physical one, it ensures the use of the cultural asset during temporary or prolonged closures. The objective of the Institute is therefore to offer virtual tours also for the other sites of competence, favoring the archaeological areas, museum spaces and historical environments which due to their location or geomorphological conformation are more difficult to reach, in order to generate interest – through the attractiveness of digital, especially for the new generations – also with regard to goods that are unknown or less familiar to the general public. This is the case of Villa d’Este which in the collective imagination is better known for its historic garden and fountains, rather than as a piece of mannerism or for the historical-artistic beauties of the Renaissance palace”.
