“Il Mosaico” in concert at the Certosa di Firenze

Thursday 9 May 2024at 9.00 pm, the Charterhouse of Florence (Via della Certosa, 1), hosts the symphony performance of the Swiss Youth Orchestra The Mosaicfor the opening of the new spring programming of International Festival of Youth Orchestras.

The Swiss formation, since its foundation, dating back over 30 years ago, has been directed by Maestro Hermann Ostendarp, assisted in the preparation of the wind section by Maestro Wilfrid Stillhard.

The Florentine program opens with the performance of Concerto for piano and orchestra n. 5 in E flat major by Ludwig van Beethoven. The composition of the Master of Bonn is divided into three movements – Allegro, Adagio un poco mosso, Rondo: Allegro – and was composed between 1809 and 1810. Known by the nickname ‘Emperor‘, the concert was dedicated by the composer to Archduke Rudolph John of Habsburg-Lorraine, already dedicatee of the quarto.

Virtuosity, joy, pomposity, extreme singing, sublime sweetness, imperious sparkling and enthralling final sprint, will be the different elements enhanced by the refined touch of young Ukrainian solo pianist Andriy Dragan, winner of prestigious international awards, including the Prix Credit Suisse Jeune Solistes and the Kiefer-Hablitzel Competitionguest of the most important festivals, from Lucerne to Verbier, from Bergen to Auver-sur-Oise, from the Gstaad Menuhin Festival to the Contrasts and Virtuoso Festival in Lviv.

The second part of the evening will see the Il Mosaico Orchestra try their hand at interpreting the Symphony no. 1 in C minor op. 68 by the Hamburg composer Johannes Brahms. Divided into four movements, it is often compared in complexity to Beethoven’s latest works; a monumental masterpiece for continuity called ‘Tenth Symphony’, as an ideal decadent continuation of Beethoven’s romanticism.

Heroism, lyricism, violin and horn solos, energetic accents and, again, the final horn solo evoking the passionate dedication to Clara Schumann, lead us to the magnificent hymn of majestic power, with the resumption of the introduction in the final apotheosis .

Free and free entry.
