Fp Cgil, with Cgil Venezia and Patronato Inca, opens an assistance desk for prison workers
The desolate state in which he finds himself, from the point of view of overcrowding and lack of staff in the Santa Maria Maggiore prison in Venice, this has been known for some time, also confirmed by a regional report by the Prisoners’ Guarantor but now the union FP Cgil, together with the Inca Patronagetries to meet the needs of the staff on duty with a dedicated desk.
“In Venice the data shows the Santa Maria Maggiore prison with 223 inmates with a capacity of 159 units, with overcrowding of 140%: a situation which, despite the efforts made in the last period by the Management, leads the Venetian prison to be a real powder keg – highlights Franca Vanto, Regional Secretary of the FP CGIL.
“The shortage of staff in all areas (from policemen, to educators, from psychologists to health workers) is dramatic, which reflects the situation of the other detention facilities in our region – continues the trade unionist – In addition to asking for more staff for some time, we are asking for more training in the treatment of prisoners with mental health problems who are increasingly present in Santa Maria Maggiore, as well as adequate treatment paths for these people, preventing prison from becoming a real own social landfill.”
“The working conditions of staff are increasingly disastrous – Vanto further underlines – with exhausting shifts and an increasingly ordinary overtime, with frequent attacks by detained staff exasperated by impossible living conditions”.
“To give a contribution to the workers of Santa Maria Maggiore, together with the CGIL Camera del Lavoro of Venice and the Inca Patronato of Venice we have opened an assistance and information desk to provide all useful information on service cases, social security issues with processing of contribution statements on site, but also on contractual issues as well as a listening center to collect particular situations
of working difficulties” – concludes the secretary.
