The Opi of Reggio Calabria celebrates International Nurses Day

The date that celebrates this noble profession is not accidental. It was established by the International Council of Nurses – a federation of more than 130 National Nursing Associations – representing approximately 13 million nurses worldwide, and coincides with the birth, in 1820, of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing sciences.

Since 1992, in Italy, the National Federation of Nursing Professions (FNOPI) has promoted this International Day with events aimed at highlighting the commitment of nurses, their culture, their ever-increasing goals and the desire to create an ever-increasing greater alliance with citizens. The slogan chosen this year by FNOPI is “We nourish health” highlighting the daily commitment made by the profession to develop a citizen-friendly health system. In fact, the right to health must not only be guaranteed, but enhanced through actions that protect people and enable them to access services that are increasingly targeted and responsive to their needs.

This year, for International Nurses Day, the OPI of Reggio Calabria with its President, Dr. Pasquale Zito, has decided to celebrate the values of the nursing profession by involving the “Territorial Council” and the “Training and updating Commission” of the Order and making use of the collaboration of the Help social promotion association, with the activation of a stand on the FALCOMATA LUNGOMARE ‘, NEAR THE LIDO STATION, FROM 4.30 PM TO 7.30 PM. At the stand, nurses will carry out, free of charge, checks of vital parameters (blood pressure, etc.) and blood sugar levels. Furthermore, under the supervision of the local SIMEUP Training Center – Italian Society of Pediatric Emergency Medicine – made up of Reggini nurses who are instructors recognized at regional and national level – it will be demonstrated, with the use of mannequins, what to do when a child or an adult swallows a foreign body and risks suffocation. Additionally, they will address the risks associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome and the ways to prevent it: it is a very serious form of brain trauma, which, in one case out of four, leads to coma or the death of infants, yet easily preventable.

It will be an opportunity to distribute information material regarding correct lifestyles in order to prevent some common pathologies. Finally, information will be provided regarding the figure and role of the Nurse as part of his studies and in the workplace, both at a local and home level, making reference to the new goals that this profession is reaching. An opportunity to meet, get to know each other, and make citizens better understand the importance of the nurse’s role in taking care of people, in every moment of their lives.
