UISP’s appeal to mayoral candidates

President Minardi: “Invest in physical activity. Movement must be part of the daily life of all citizens at all ages”

Press office

Reggio Emilia – The Uisp, in order to raise awareness and promote the culture of movement and prevention, invites the city’s mayoral candidates to promote a new “extraordinary” commitment that certifies the strategic role of physical activity in public policies.

In a very critical historical moment for public health at risk of marginalization, with the increase in pathologies linked to air pollution and bad eating habits and the rate of sedentary lifestyle that continues to affect large segments of the population, UISP asks to put a co-design strategy at the center with local actors to encourage physical activity in all groups of citizens.

The commitment we ask of those who are running to govern the city – declares the president of Uisp Reggio Emilia Azio Minardi – is to pay the utmost attention to those projects and initiatives which in every area (economic, social, environmental, cultural) can encourage people to “move” and change an excessively sedentary lifestyle.

It will not be the primary emergency of this city – continues Minardi – but certainly physical movement, recognized as the first medicine to be administered to everyone, should be at the center of far-sighted and innovative public policies

UISP’s invitation is not to relegate physical activity and sport to the prerogatives of a department, but to insert it as a permanent ingredient in all public policies. To do this, Municipalities should find new forms of involvement and forums for discussionencouraging subsidiary dynamics through co-programming and co-planning to enhance third sector associations.

Here is what UISP asks of those who apply to manage the city for the next five years:

  1. support them grassroots sports clubs in their primary role as promoters and disseminators of physical activity and stably finance the ordinary maintenance of sports facilities
  2. simplify bureaucratic procedures to encourage associations to promote events and initiatives in the area
  3. more sports at school: encourage physical activity courses in comprehensive institutes with agreements and projects with sports bodies and clubs
  4. there urban mobility: discourage car travel and reward forms of alternative and sustainable mobility
  5. Community houses – we propose that public health promotes physical activity not only in the formulation of prevention policies but as permanent and “personalized” service. For this reason it is necessary to identify within the community houses the motor activity consultant with the aim of entering into an integral part of the articulation of territorial public health services able to draw a picture of needs and opportunities for physical movement for all citizens
  6. push the business world to promote corporate welfare policies to encourage healthy lifestyles: bike to work, well-being practices in the workplace, work-life balance
  7. public parks as relationship gyms: if manned by instructors and sports entertainers, the network of city parks can become a system of open-air gyms. More lively and animated places are safer places and training grounds for social cohesion.
