Pint of Science is back in town

An unmissable event for fans of science and beerthe event returns to 24 Italian cities and over 400 around the world Pint of Science. In Italy, at its ninth edition, the seventh for the city of Reggio Calabria, the Pints of Science, will bring the most current scientific issues into pubs. In Reggio Calabria the colors of chemistry, volcanoes, earthquakes, artificial intelligence, bioaerosols will be some of the topics that will be possible to sip in the two pubs of the city. The most sparkling event with scientific dissemination returns to 76 pubs and 24 Italian cities on the evenings of 13, 14 and 15 May. From the six cities of the first edition in 2015 to the 24 cities of the 2024 edition: the rhythm is that of an event that is increasingly loved for its informal way of making science a shared knowledge.

Talking about science over a mug of beer? A bet that has proved successful in Reggio Calabria since the first participation in the international event, Pint of Science, in 2017. And for this edition, which will take place from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th May, the researchers will be in two pubs in the city, at the Funky Drop in via Zecca and at Birri Basta in via Cattolica dei Greci. In Reggio Calabria, of the six themes of the Festival, two will be present: Planet Earth (earth sciences, evolution and zoology) e Tech Me Out (technology). All unmissable i six talks scheduled for the 2024 edition of Pint of Science Reggio Calabria – one each for each of the two themes and for each of the three evenings, all starting at 8pm.

In line with the national program, also in Reggio Calabria, the choice will be difficult between the themes of technological innovation, sustainability, climate emergency and environment, at the center of many talks, some of which also take inspiration from the many research initiatives in which they are researchers busy. As always, the real problem will be the choice, given the number of speakers and the topics.

The three-day program

Monday 13 May to open the 2024 edition, at the Funky Drop, there will be Francesco Mauriello, Associate Professor of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, who will accompany us on a journey through time in which the transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable alternatives will be highlighted, such as biofuels and green hydrogen. Massimo Merenda, senior researcher at the Mediterranean University, will be at Birri Basta to help us discover how electronics have changed every aspect of our lives.

Tuesday 14th from Birri Basta, Angela Gioffrè, researcher at the INAIL Research Center in Lamezia Terme, will talk to us about bioaerosols and the effects that these particles have on our organism. At the same time as the Funky Drop, the topic of territorial defense from earthquakes will be discussed with Giuseppe Tomasello (UniRC Researcher).

To conclude, Wednesday 15that the Funky Drop, Marco Corrao (Geologist) will accompany us on an adventure to discover the volcanoes of the Mediterranean, while Lorenzo Musarella (Unirc Researcher) will talk to us about artificial intelligence and CyberSecurity at Birri Basta.

Info

During each of the three evenings, the pubs involved will host interactive presentations of around 40 minutes followed by questions from the public, in an atmosphere made conversational and relaxed also thanks to the beers poured during the conversation. The beating heart of the association are also the many volunteers who are part of the local teams who, with great passion for science and for the pleasure of meeting together, organize this event. A special mention cannot fail to be made to the Dream Team from Reggio who, very close-knit, have been organizing the event for years, combining science, beer and fun.

Pint of Science is organized by the non-profit cultural association “Pint of Science Italia” and is a non-profit event in which everyone collaborates on a voluntary basis, created thanks to the teams operating in each city. This year too, special thanks go to INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), which has accompanied Pint of Science Italia since its first edition with sponsorship throughout the country. And also to NBFC-National Center for Biodiversity and OGS-National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, sponsor of the Planet Earth theme, and to the Extended Partnership for Quantum Sciences and Technologies, NQSTI-National Quantum Science and Technology Institute, sponsor of the theme Tech Me Out.

Pint of Science: the history and the numbers

In 2012 Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul were two researchers at Imperial College London. They started an event called “Meet the researchers” in which some patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, motor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis could go to their laboratories to see what kind of research they did. The event was very motivating for both visitors and researchers. They thought that if people want to go into labs and meet researchers, why not take researchers out to meet people? And so Pint of Science was born. In May 2013 the first edition of Pint of Science was held (in the UK only) which brought some of the most renowned researchers to the general public to talk about their innovative work to science and beer lovers.

In Italy, the event landed in 2015, involving the first six cities – Genoa, Trento, Siena, Rome, Pavia, Milan – which more than tripled in the space of just a few years. In 2019, the festival took place simultaneously in 23 Italian cities (Avellino-Sarno, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Ferrara, Genoa, L’Aquila, Milan, Naples, Padua, Palermo, Pisa-Lucca, Pavia, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Siena, Trento-Rovereto, Trieste and Turin) reaching record attendances and, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition, due to the pandemic, in 2021, to remain close to its audience, the festival was created online with a very engaging format. Since 2022 the festival has returned to attendance, and the 2024 edition we are preparing to see 24 cities involved and an ever-increasing number of pubs and researchers. At an international level, 26 countries are involved in literally every corner of the world (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Laos, Mexico, Norway, Holland , Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and Hungary).
