Tickets for the historic tourist train scheduled for Sunday 19 May 2024, when the Tanaro Railway will return as the protagonist in a day to discover the wonderful villages of the upper valley, sold out quickly. A journey into traditions on board the train with steam locomotive, centoporte carriages and baggage compartment, which will begin its journey in Turin to reach Ormea (CN), the last station of the railway route in Alto Tanaro, after several stops along the way. The program includes departure at 8.00 am on Sunday 19 May from Turin Porta Nuova, with intermediate stops in Turin Lingotto, Mondovì and Ceva. In this last station the locomotives will be exchanged with relative coupling of the steam locomotive, to continue the journey and get to the heart of the discovery of the Alto Tanaro.

Immersed in the suggestive natural panorama of the valley, rich in woods and biodiversity, the train will make a first stop, during the outward journey, in Nucetto (estimated arrival at 10.36 am) where travelers will be able to stop for just over an hour and watch a a moment dedicated to food and taste. Chef Paolo Pavarino, a true institution in the local food and wine sector, will talk about and propose, through a show cooking, the country’s typical product par excellence, the chickpea.

A visit to the Railway Museum and the Historical Museum of Nucetto and the Alta Val Tanaro is also planned. Departure from Nucetto at 11.51am with arrival in Ormea at 12.35pm, where the stop will be longer and the return scheduled for the afternoon. Here travelers will be able to admire the beauty of the historic city centre, walking through the characteristic ‘trevi’ (alleys) and having lunch in the participating businesses and restaurants.

Among the initiatives proposed in Ormea there will be the musical entertainment of the “Rosamunda Folkfest” at the train station and along the streets of the centre. It will also be possible to freely visit the widespread exhibition, “Not just bread, not just roses”, whose theme focuses on the role of women from 1946 to the present day. The works, created by Le Ragazze di Ormea, are exhibited at the railway station, the Casa delle Meridiane and the Sala Colombo, the “Spring in bloom” market exhibition will take place: herbs and flowers in May with small tastings of typical foods. It will remain open to visits throughout the afternoon, with free admission , the “La Casa” Ethnographic Museum, a small jewel of rural tradition, which offers the faithful reconstruction of an ancient house in its daily life.

For those who wish to learn more about the history and traditions of the town, a free guided tour of the historic center will be held at 2.00 pm, accompanied by a qualified tourist guide. Shortly before the departure from Ormea, at 3.00 pm in the Salone della Croce Bianca (train station area), the presentation of the book “Cold Case al Grand Hotel” by Bruno Vallepiano, written for D’Acqua e di Ferro, already plot of the Escape Train on November 5, 2023. The departure will be at 4.00 pm from Ormea station and, during the return journey, the historic train will stop in Bagnasco (arrival 4.52 pm) where there will be waiting for the passengers the swashbucklers of the “Bal do Sabre”. At the town’s events area, it will be possible to watch the performance of the famous armed dance, before the restart scheduled for 6.07pm.

The return to Ceva is scheduled at 6.45pm, with continuation to Turin Porta Nuova where the train will end its run at 9.05pm. The initiative is included among the intangible activities of the Villages and Castles project along the Tanaro Railway: infrastructure recovery, cultural and social regeneration between history and landscape – PNRR Mission 1, Component 3 – Culture 4.0 (M1C3) Mis.2, Inv. 2.1, financed by the European Union and promoted by the Ministry of Culture as part of the attractiveness of historic villages.

The Tourist Train runs, already organized in previous years, are part of a local project that includes cultural and social regeneration actions which bring together the entertainment and reception activities of the tourist and cultural associations of the three municipalities (Ormea, Bagnasco and Nucetto ). Culture, history and traditions are the underlying theme of the initiatives proposed and expressed in various artistic forms such as shows, thematic exhibitions, reviews, conferences and in-depth studies. But not only that, on several occasions, the area has offered travelers and visitors days dedicated to hiking and the outdoors, elements that well represent the essence of slow tourism in the Valtana area.
