Discover Hidden Perugia: Stories of Prisons, Etruscans and Red Light Districts

Gran Tour Perugia offers a weekend of unique explorations in the Umbrian city

This weekend, Perugia is revealed through a guided tour organized by Gran Tour Perugia, which will take participants through the centuries and the varied facets of a city with a rich and complex history. The event, entitled “Discover Hidden Perugia”, will offer three distinct itineraries, each focused on a unique aspect of the Umbrian city.

The tour will begin on Saturday 11 May at 4pm with the “Prisons and prisoners” route. Participants will gather in Piazza Matteotti, from where they will explore ancient detention sites located in surprising places such as the Palazzo dei Priori and the Rocca Paolina. The visit will be enriched by narratives on the touching stories of the individuals who were once imprisoned in these spaces, offering an intimate look at the social and judicial history of the city.

On Sunday 12 May, at 10.30am, the “Etruscan Perugia” will begin, an archaeological trek that will follow the ancient walls of the city. During this walk, visitors will be able to discover lesser-known wonders, such as the Etruscan Well, an extraordinary testimony to Etruscan hydraulic engineering dating back to the 3rd century BC. This itinerary offers a perfect combination of physical activity and cultural enrichment, with a cost of 16 euros per person, which includes entry to the Etruscan Well, while for children up to 12 years the cost is reduced to 10 euros and access is free for children up to 6 years.

The tour cycle will end on Sunday afternoon at 4pm with “Perugia under red lights”, a journey through the neighborhoods which, before the approval of the Merlin law in the 1950s, were known for being places of perdition. This walk will offer an immersion in the social history of Perugia, exploring how customs and society evolved from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
