“Salvation can arrive on Sunday”, headlines today’s edition of Il Quotidiano di Puglia. Lecce could celebrate staying in Serie A without playing. It would be the first time in the club’s history. Everything is linked to the results of the other teams involved in the fight for a place in the 2024-2025 Serie A championship.
For the first time in the history of the Lecce team, permanence in the Olympus of Italian football could even happen without even taking the field – we read in the newspaper -. It goes without saying that Lecce’s early salvation is linked to the results of their rivals on the 36th matchday, third to last of the championship. The match between Frosinone and Inter will open the round, scheduled for Friday evening at the “Stirpe” stadium, after which it will continue on Saturday with the evening match at the Meazza between Milan and Cagliari; therefore, on Sunday, the last three matches involving the fight for survival will be played: at 12.30 pm Lazio and Empoli will take to the field, then at 3 pm it will be the turn of Genoa-Sassuolo and Verona-Turin. Lecce, as is known, will play on Monday at 6.30 pm, at the Via del Mare stadium, against Udinese, another team fighting to avoid relegation.
There are at least five (perhaps even more) hypotheses for the Salento team to remain in Serie A, some of which involve resorting to the separated ranking (at least three teams arriving on equal points). In this sense, Gotti’s team finds itself in an iron barrel. In fact, the Giallorossi are ahead of Sassuolo (one win and one draw), Empoli (one win and one draw), Frosinone (one win and one draw), and Cagliari (one win and one draw) and tied with Udinese (1-1 in the first leg pending the return match scheduled for Monday). Only against Verona is Lecce at a disadvantage due to the 2-2 draw in the first leg at Bentegodi and the 0-1 defeat suffered in the return leg at Via del Mare
