Marsala, collapses at the entrance of the new Palace of Justice

It is truly singular that less than five years after the inauguration (it was 9 October 2019 and for the occasion the then Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafede also arrived in the city, as well as important exponents of the judiciary) the new Palace of Justice of Marsala is already starting to show some signs of weakening.

It’s true that the mega structure was built a few years before the inauguration, but ultimately not very many. Yet, in the internal part of the front of the main entrance arch (via del Fante) the panels already appear visibly damaged and risk, when the wind blows strongly, and in Marsala it often happens, falling on those passing under them. For this reason, in recent days, it was decided to close the gates and cordon off the entrance, both inside and outside. For now, therefore, you enter from the driveway: the entrance on the Corso Antonio Gramsci side.

The maintenance and safety works were, however, immediately contracted out. “The renovation works – explains the President of the Court, Alessandra Camassa – will begin on May 13th. The access ban was chosen on the street
prudential with a short advance notice given the strong winds of the last few days. As for the intervention, it was necessary due to a sudden and unpredictable deterioration of the structure. Although inaugurated a few years ago for its intended purpose, the Court building is much older, and is the result of an integrated contract managed by multiple administrations over a very long period of time. Furthermore, the structure was the subject of a major change of use. The management of the properties – concludes President Camassa – has only been ministerial for a few years, and as soon as the critical situation was realised, action was taken immediately, as proof the works will begin in just a week. The works will take place in maximum safety and a detailed safety plan has been prepared for this purpose. The Court building is much older than five years since its inauguration, so maintenance problems are completely ordinary. The works will be completed by mid-June.”

In September 2019, the Municipality handed over the property to the Ministry of Justice on loan for use in 2019 for 99 years. The works began in 2007 (but the project dates back to 2000). The cost of the work was over 13 million 500 thousand euros. The works were financed with two loans taken out with the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti by the Ministry of Justice (10 million and 700 thousand euros) and by the Municipality of Marsala (one million and 955 thousand euros) and
also with municipal funds: 850 thousand euros. The works were carried out by an association of companies
formed by Iride (group leader), Itaca, Airtemp Division and Co.ri.mar. (principals), whose technicians have
designed the work. ATI won the tender with a reduction of 31.22% on the starting bid.
