Special guest on Friday 10 May at 6pm at the headquarters of Dickens Fellowship in Piazza Alberica 2/aa Carrara, la Professor Cathy Waters, International President of the Dickens Fellowship and all branches around the world with the conference Great Expectations, Estuarine Dreams. An important presence in our city of Carrara on the very day Albericiana Academy celebrates the Foundation of Carrara Nova (10 May 1557 – 24 May 2024). The President, accompanied by Marzia Dati, will bring greetings to all members of the Albericiana from all the Dickensian branches in the world on Friday 10th at Palazzo Binelli at 5 pm.
Cathy Water She is Professor Emerita of English Literature at the University of Kent (UK), Australian by birth, she taught English Literature at the University of New England (Australia) and subsequently at the University of Sydney. An expert in Victorian literature and culture, she is considered one of the greatest experts on Charles Dickens. His numerous publications dedicated to the great English writer: Dickens and the Politics of the Family (Cambridge University Press 1997), Commodity Culture in Dickens’s Household Words: The Social Life of Goods (Ashgate 2008), winner of the Robert Colby Prize of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals in 2009, author of Special Correspondence and the Newspaper Press in Victorian Print Culture, 1850-1886 (Palgrave Macmillan 2019). She anchors Journalism on the move: Victorian Specials Database, and co-editor of numerous essay collections including The Oxford Handbook for Charles Dickens with Robert L. Patten and John O. Jordan (Oxford 2018).
The conference, introduced by Marzia Dati, will focus on the famous novel Great Expectations, whose immortal characters Pip and Estella rightfully belong to world literature. Professor Waters will focus in particular on the landscape of North Kent where the Thames flows, an area also linked to memories of Dickens’ childhood in Chatham, hence the title Estuarine Dreams.
