Andora, 8 May 2024 – New chance for sprinters Today in the stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia 2024. We’ll have to wait for that dirt road on Thursday 9 May to see more battles between the big boys, though Tadej Pogacar he set out to produce shows like what happened in Fossano in the third stage, Geraint Thomas he responded presently, while in the fourth stage there was a sumptuous attack by Pippo Ganna on Capo Mele then beaten by Lidl Trek due to Jonathan’s success in the sprint Milan.

Today’s stage measures 178 kilometres, goes from Genoa to Lucca and with two total Gpm. On paper it looks like a group sprint stage given that the climbs shouldn’t be selective and are still too far from the finish line. The stage is almost entirely along the Aurelia state road, but halfway through there is the third category climb to Passo del Bracco, a good springboard for any escapes, in an initial route made up of climbs between Ruta at kilometer 16 and Chiavari at kilometer 36 After the Bracco Pass, the road is slightly downhill to reach the finishing line of Ceparana and the Intergiro of Luni. Shortly afterwards the road leads to Camaiore where you climb the short Montemagno, peak 22 from the finish line, before descending along Val Freddana and reaching the finish line in Lucca. The last flat km consists of a series of straights connected by some large semi-curves. Of note is only one right-angle bend 2.5 km from the finish. Final straight line of 350 m on asphalt 8 m wide. It should be a stage for sprinters.
Yesterday’s stage
Second victory at the Giro for Milan, member of the Olympic track pursuit quartet, excellently driven by Simone Consonnianother of the quartet, which was decisive in resuming Ganna 500 meters from the finish line. Consonni found himself having to chase his national teammate to favor his teammate, in fact he didn’t spare any jokes upon arrival: “In the end I didn’t know whether to shoot to catch Ganna or let him win. They put me in the middle – Consonni’s joke – Today we wanted to win and we were a great team, then Milan did the rest with a great sprint”. The 2024 Giro will continue on Wednesday 8 May with the fifth stage from Genoa to Lucca which should not include any major shake-ups in the general classification, with only two GPMs on the route and an arrival that should once again favor a sprint. Certainly, as often happens, an initial breakaway will start but the sprinters’ teams will be able to keep the race together in the second part despite Montemagno’s breakaway twenty minutes from the finish line.
