Sebastian Ionut Gutuman, 23 years old, had found refuge in Pamplona, the Spanish city famous for the running of the bulls, thus escaping the “Perseverant” operation, the roundup of 29 February conducted by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria which, coordinated by the Prosecutor Emanuele Crescenti and the Deputy Prosecutor Davide Lucisano of the Palmi Prosecutor’s Office, had shed light on the drug flows among the young people of the Piana di Gioia Tauro. On that occasion, the investigation by the Carabinieri soldiers was initiated by the complaint lodged by the father of a young drug user who, given the bad situation his daughter was taking, had decided to give up his pride as a parent. and confide the girl’s addiction to the Carabinieri of the Taurianova and San Martino di Taurianova stations. The subsequent investigations carried out by the investigators, started in March 2020 and concluded years later, ascertained the man’s fears, finding the existence of a thriving light and hard drug market, based in Taurianova and branches in Rosarno, Platì and Gerocarne , where the narcotic suppliers were based.
Having fortuitously escaped arrest and convinced that he was now out of the range of action of the Army soldiers, the captured man and his family led a normal life in Pamplona, in total anonymity. They didn’t imagine, thousands of kilometers away from Calabria, that they would still have the Carabinieri breathing down their necks. In fact, even before the captures, the investigators had managed to break the “intercom” telephone circuit used by Gutuman and his associates and monitored their daily lives. He did not escape them when the mother of today’s arrested man, speaking with a relative of hers, revealed that she had left Italy and was in Spain.
The International Cooperation Service of the Ministry of the Interior was immediately activated, which, having made contact with the Spanish counterpart, allowed the exchange of information between the Carabinieri and the gendarmes of the Guardia Civil. And this is how, pursuant to the European Arrest Warrant issued by the Court of Palmi, the wanted 23-year-old was handcuffed. Now back in Italy, he awaits trial under precautionary measures.
With Gutuman, the Carabinieri brought to justice all the suspects of the “Perseverant” operation affected by a restrictive measure from the Palmi GIP.
The proceeding is currently pending in the investigation phase and the actual responsibility of the person receiving the precautionary measure, together with the validity of the accusations made against him, will be examined during the subsequent trial. Further investigative and evidentiary developments cannot be ruled out, including in favor of the person under investigation.
