Falcinelli case, the USA: ‘We recognize Italy’s concerns’

The first official reaction from the American government has arrived after the controversy linked to the case of Matteo Falcinelli, a 25-year-old Italian arrested last February in Miami for having “resisted” the police when leaving a nightclub and brutally tortured in the cell. “We recognize the concerns raised by the Italian government and the Falcinelli family regarding the circumstances of Matteo’s arrest. We understand that the Miami police have opened an internal investigation into this case. We will continue to monitor these developments.” These are the words of a spokesperson for the US State Department to ANSA, specifically regarding the violent arrest of the Italian student.

Compliance with relevant legal obligations

The US State Department, the spokesperson continued, “works diligently to ensure that US law enforcement agencies comply with their legal obligations regarding notification and consular access when foreign nationals are detained in the United States, in accordance with the law applicable national and in accordance with international obligations”. Furthermore, he concluded, “we expect foreign governments to treat U.S. citizens abroad in the same way.”
